Sri Lanka - Before the tsunamil
THE HUTS OF FISHERMEN and squatters are typically filled with one foot of water although improvements include providing barricades of rocks, sand or wood.
THESE HUMBLE SHELTERS are the homes of the poor of Sri Lanka. These huts, though shabby, are at least raised above the water line.
fr. Alexis Fernando, of Saint Christopher'.s Church, Baldwin, shared these photos with The Leader'.s J«)an Delanej to show conditioas in Sri Lanka hefore the tsunami. For Saint Christopher's elTort to alie^iale this disaster, see paj^e 5.
AFTER YEARS OF WORK, this family was able to create an enclosed shelter with electricity. The furniture and television made them some" of the more fortunate. All of this has been swept away in the tsunami.
