Bianco: 'Oiesels not operating
A deadline was recently passed in the ongoing saga of the New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation's directives concerning Freeport's Power Plant 2.
On November 26, Commissioner Erin Crotty of the DEC, citing an inability to
comply '• with'-emissions standards, ordered Freepoft Electric to close the. Power Plant 2 diesels by January 31. The village announced it would appeal the ruling, claiming fiscal hardship in light of the need to purchase higher priced electric generating capacity even if the capacity
is notactually used.
The village continues construction of its new turbines at Plant 2, with an anticipated start date of no later than April 1.
The Leader contacted a spokesperson •for Freeport Electric Superintendent Hub Bianco, who was in meetings in
Washington, D.C., and recieved the following statement: "Freeport Electric is complying with all of the requirements of the Title V Permit and the DEC ruling. The Power Plant 2 diesels are not operating."
