WILKOMMEN: With the students from Walldorf are Freeport School District Superintendent Dr. Eric Eversley, High School Principal Dr. IVIichael Courtney, Mayor Bill Glacken and the Village Board of Trustees, Deputy Mayor Renaire Frierson,
Trustees Bill White, Jr., Don Mauersberger and Don Miller. Also in the photo are Freeport Assistant Principal Marie Y. Schroeder, Assistant Chief Allan Grosser, and chaperones Christa Birkenmaier and Manfred Wolff.
Sixteen young people from Gemiany, along with their chaperones, arrived at Freeport High School Saturday to begin their brief stay in the village. The high school students from Freeport's sister city, Walldorf, are guests of local families while they participate in a special student schedule at the high school, which includes language arts study. They are expected to visit New York City and take part in other cultural enrichment programs while here.
The visit was the culmination of an idea that began over two years ago with a visit to Mayor Glacken's office by a delegation from the Walldorf Village Council, headed by Burgermeister [Mayor] Heinz Merklinger, • and which included Councilwoman and educator Christa Birkenmaier. freeport's fire department has maintained a long-established relationship with the German village thanks to connections made by Assistant Fire Chief Allan Grosser, who was stationed nearby when he served in the Army. Mayor Glacken and Trustees Don Miller, Bill White, Jr., and Don Mauersberger took part in establishing an official alliance with the village of Walldorf in 2003. The Freeport School District, with the help of Assistant High School Principal "Marie Y. Schroeder, arranged for the visit of the young people, and the Freeport Fire Department assisted in arranging for host families for the youngsters.
Puring the welcoming ceremonies, Freeport School District Superintendent Dr. Eric Eversley, Mayor Glacken and Assistant Chief Allan Grosser all expressed their appreciation to everyone who worked so hard to bring about the visit by the German youngsters, and pledged to help facilitate a visit by Freeport students to Walldorf next year.
FHS Principal Courtney Resigns
Dr. Michael Courtney, principal of Freeport High School, has accepted a position as an Assistant Superintendent in Westchester County, effective December 13. Dr. Courtney has accomplished much during his tenure in Freeport.
"It has been a pleasure and an honor to have served as the principal of Freeport High School. I leave with mixed feehngs of sadness and anticipation," said Dr. Courtney. "My heart will.always be.with the Red Devils." Dr. Eric L. Eversley, Superintendent of Freeport Schools, said, "We thank Dr. Courtney for
his years of service to the students of Freeport High School and we extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes to him as he furthers his career."
To continue the initiatives launched under Dr. Courtney's leadership, the formal search for a highly qualified successor has already begun. The district is making efforts to secure the services of an interim principal who can continue to move the school forward while the search for a permanent principal proceeds.
