Gang attests made in Freeport; anti-gang group meets
by Laura Schofer
Two gang-related incidents within the past week resulted in the arrest of and John Andujar, 19, of Ray Street, as well as two younger teenagers for slashing a 16-year-old boy's face with a razor-type object and striking the victim with a baseball bat.
The victim is a reported MS-13 gang member. The three assailants are reportedly members of the Latin Kings gang.
The first incident occurred on Tuesday, September 21. First squad detectives reported that the victim was sitting on railroad ties facing Merrick Road at Long Beach Avenue in Freeport when he was approached by the three suspects who then fled the scene on foot, running
northbound on South Long Beach Avenue to Porterfield Place. There, they entered a blue Honda Civic. The Honda proceeded westbound on Porterfield Place.
There was a second victim in the baseball bat incident. He is a 17-year-old boy, also reported by police to be an MS-13 gang member.
On Sunday, September 26, the three suspects once again attacked the 16-year-old boy with a razor on Guy Lombardo Avenue, police said.
The victim was transported to South Nassau Communities Hospital where he received over 30 staples to close the laceration in his head. Prior to transport, the victim positively identified the 15-year-old alleged assailant. Freeport Police later arrested the other two suspects.

Mr. Andujar and the 17-year-old teenager were each charged with Gang Assault, Assault and Possession of a Dangerous Weapon. They were arraigned in First District Court on Monday, September 27. They pled not guilty. The 15-year-old boy was charged with Gang Assault and will be arraigned in Family Court on a later date.
Freeport Police Chief Michael Woodward said that when an individual is charged with Gang Assault the Nassau County District Attorney's office "carefully looks over these cases.
The Major Offense Bureau reviews the circumstances for each case to determine if federal prosecution is in order." Grace Cucchissi, the deputy chief of the Major Offense Bureau, is the liaison with the United States Attorney General.
Chief Woodward added that "age is a major consideration [in determining if there will be state or federal prosecution]. The federal government claims infancy to age 18 unless there is a prior offense while the State of New York claims infancy to age 16."
On September 25, just before midnight, a shooting occurred on Archer Street. The victim, a 22-year-old man, was leaning against a car talking with a group of friends when he heard a shot fired and felt
pain in his hip. The victim was with a group of friends who then ran into a rear yard on Archer Street, where they reportedly heard three to five more shots, possibly coming from west of their location.
The victim, who Lives in Queens, suffered from a laceration to his left hip. Others at the scene were from Freeport, according to Chief Woodward. Although the shooting was not random, "the incident does not appear to be gang related," said Chief Woodward.
In other news Chief Woodward told The Leader that "substantial progress has been made in the Dianna Correa case."
In trying to combat the gang issue community members have initiated a new program called Helping End Violence Now (HEVN) which will have a meeting on Thursday, September 30, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at Refuge Church of Christ.
Anyone interested in participating in this program and/or learning more about it may call 538-1108. Members of several churches, civic organizations, the -Freeport School District, the Freeport business community, Freeport community agencies and well as residents have joined this program.
