The New York State Department of Education recently announced that Dodd Middle School has been classified as a School In Need for Improvement for eighth grade English Language Arts while Freeport High School has been identified as a School Requiring Academic Progress for English Language Arts and Math. These two Freeport Schools have been , placed on this list for the second year in a row.
A statement issued by Freeport schools said that the "Freeport Public School District is firmly committed to enhancing student achievement. Our schools have made significant gains. Yet, we are concerned that two of our schools, Freeport High School and Dodd Middle School, remain on state and federal improvement lists. The district is well aware of these classifications and has already analyzed student performance data and strategies have been implemented to extend positive trends in increased performance. Our goal is to remove each school from
these federal and state classifications and provide the opportiinity for academic excellence that all of our children deserve."
In need of improvement...perhaps what is really needs improvement is the way the state and federal government have decided to fund our schools. Let's face it, a school district like Freeport, which has many minority students needs more funding, not less, to close the education gap.
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 was supposed to help close the gap between minority students and their White and Asian counterparts. It was hailed as landmark legislation that said it was critical that no child, regardless of race, family financial situations, physical or mental impairments, or any other obstacles that may hinder obtaining a quality education, be left behind and denied the education they deserve.
What has happened? The law has not received the dollars it needs to make this a reality. According to United States Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, $26.4 billion was needed to implement the bill in 2002. Congress (continued on page 2)

Freeporters gather on Bayview
More than 100 people gathered at the traffic circle on South Bayview Avenue last Saturday to take part in a memorial service honoring those Freeporters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
The traffic circle has served as a memorial spot since the tragedy and Cathy Monestere, along with a few other volunteers, has maintained a candlelight vigil there every night since the event.
The ceremony opened with a color guard provided by the Freeport Fire
Department. There were special poems and remembrances from young children, the families of the victims read their loved ones names, and a bugler played a moving rendition of Taps. The event was organized by Cathy Monestere, with the help of several volunteers, and special assistance from the members of Hose Company No. 3. After the service, a reception was held in Hose No. 3's firehouse that included food donated for the occasion by Bread N' Quiches, which is located in Freeport.
