SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT Dr. Eric.L. Eversley, Assistant Superintendent Dr. IVIary Bedial<o and Cam Pardo of the Freeport PTA work the grills at the Freeport Public Schools' second annual back-to-school barbecue, part of the district's First Day celebration. Cam and his wife Connie are active PTA members.
FREEPORT DEPUTY MAYOR Renaire Frierson-Davis enjoyed the First Day celebration with her mother Evelyn Frierson, a teaching assistant at Caroline G. Atkinson School.
An estimated crowd of more than 3,000 people joined the celebration at Freeport High School last week as the school district kicked off its Second Annual First Day observances and festivities.
A joint effort of the Freeport School District and the Freeport PTAs, this First Day barbecue welcomed the whole community to share food and fun, and gave students a jubilant start to the school year.
"It's a real joy for everyone to start school with such a feeling of partnership, friendship and sharing," said
Superintendent Dr. Eric L. Eversley. "I can't think of a better way to bring everyone together to show our children how important they are to our coirmiunity."
Board members, administrators and a host of PTA volunteers staffed the grills, serving up hot dogs, burgers and all the fixings. DJ music was provided by audiovisual technician Frank Cerbini. The Freeport High School Marching Band and members of Select Chorale also performed. Jeannie Romeo, the school lunch director, organized all the food preparation,
with the help of the high school cafeteria staff. Volunteers ran carnival games for the children. A host of community service and school organizations, including Freeport Pride, United Way, Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, Freeport Sports Boosters, and Freeport PTA, distributed information about their programs for Freeport children and families.
"Bigger and better is how everyone described the event," said PTA Council President Debra Mule, who was one of
the founders and key organizers of the First Day celebrations. "The best thing you can do for your kids is to get involved in their education."
The celebration continued on September 7, the first day of school. Parents of students in grades Pre-K to 12 were invited to school with their children to have breakfast, meet teachers and find out about the many special programs each school has to offer, as they demonstrated to their children the importance of education.
