Naval Cadets sail into town
by Bill and Norma Braun
On Thursday afternoon, August 5, five 44-foot sailing vessels made their way majestically down Woodcleft Canal, Freeport, to be berthed at the new Esplanade.
It was the seventh year in a row that midshipmen from the Naval Academy at Annapolis have visited Freeport as part of their training exercises.
Each ship, with a crew of 10, was treated to special events planned by Freeport Mayor Bill Glacken, such as a barbecue and pool party Thursday, trip to Jones Beach and Roosevelt Field Mall Friday, to Yankee Stadium for a ball game and several trips to New York City. Friday, Saturday and Sunday the vessels were on display at the Esplanade and available for tours "below decks."
Conviction in 2002 Freeport murder
Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon announced Monday that an Inwood man has been convicted of murder in the June, 2002 stabbing death of a Freeport man during an attempted robbery.
William J. Potts, 32, was convicted by a Nassau County Court jury Monday of one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A-I Felony punishable by up to 25 years to life in prison.
According to Mr. Dillon, "The jury found that in the early morning hours of June 13, 2002, the defendant went with an accomplice to the home of Thomas Humphries, 37, at 252 Arthur Street, Freeport, with the intent of robbing him. During the course of the
attempted robbery, the victim was stabbed in the chest, and succumbed to his injuries later that morning at the Nassau University Medical Center. The jury found Potts guilty of felony murder, which means during the course of the robbery a non-participant of the robbery was murdered."
He will be sentenced on September 20, by Nassau County Court Judge William C. Donnino.
His accomplice, 41-year-old Virgil R. Booker of Wyandanch, was convicted by a Nassau County jury in November of 2003 of two counts of Murder in the Second Degree and two Counts of Attempted RobBery in the fijrst Degree.
