Are Your Children Safe?
by Debbie Kupperberg
County Legislator David Denenberg recently hosted a Town Meeting addressing some serious issues affecting today's youth: school violence, child abuse, bullying, Internet safety and sexual exploitation.
The program was presented by Patricia Gathers, CSW, Director of Programs and Volunteers for CAPS (Child Abuse Prevention Services), a private:,'non-prpfit organization located in Roslyh, whose purpose is to prevent child abuse and neglect before it- occurs. The organization's programs are free of charge to the community.
"All children have the right to grow up in safe families, safe schools and safe communities," said Ms. Cathers, who also served as a consultant regarding the Mepham High School hazing incident. "Prevention is really the key."
School violence: Talk to your kids about it
"After the Columbine incident in. 1999, the nation took steps to prevent this kind of disaster, "said Ms. Cathers. In 2002, the U.S. Secret Service completed the Safe Schools Initiative, a study of school shootings and other school-based attacks that was conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education. The study examined school shootings in the United States as far back as 1974, through the end of the school year in 2000, analyzing a total of 37 incidents involving 41 student attackers.
The.goal was to identify information about a school shooting that may be identifiable or noticeable before the shooting occurs, to help inform efforts to prevent school-based attacks. The study found that school shootings are rarely impulsive acts. Rather, three-quarters of school shooters
planned their attacks, told someone what is about to occur, and were encouraged to act by others.
"This tells us we should decrease the barriers to communication that exist in our schools," she noted. Ask your children, "Whom do you trust in yoiir school? Where can you go for support?"
"Currently, every New York State teacher must take a two-hour violence prevention course," added Ms. Cathers. "And since most school shooters admit to having been bullied, preventing bullying in the schools is a major issue."
Bullying: Know your school's Code of Conduct
According to Cathers, bullying includes gossiping, taunting, and relational aggression. "It involves repetitive, negative actions targeted against another that comes from an imbalance of power between two kids, whether it's social, academic or physical."

SPECIAL TRIBUTE was given to Majors Janice and David McLean.
by Marion Knoeller
Sold Out...that's the way it was at the Salvation Army Civic Dinner (tables had to be placed on the dance floor). It was a great tribute to all volunteers, as well as to Maj. Dave and Janice MacLean, who will be retiring in December. Mayor Glacken and Deputy Mayor Renaire Frierson presented plaques.
The entertainment was fabulous, including the Freeport Chorale, Hub Bianco, Harriet Johnson, Pam Jusino and Jeanne MacDonald. Dave Opatow was MC, Camilla Wier director of entertainment and Marion Knoeller, chairperson.
A really big thank you to all who attended this fabulous event - and thanks to the Freeport Chamber of Commerce for their ongoing support - with Wes Carman, Chris Creamer, the Presbyterian Church, the Nuzzi family, Gerri Roberts, Frank Hunter and Mark Treske -thanks to all those who helped in any way - see you next time!
