From Gdansk to Freeport
The Antica, a fishing boat that plied the waters of the Baltic Sea for almost 30 years, will be docked in Freeport from May 17 to May 31 before returning to its native port of Gdansk, Poland. Captain Jerzy Wasowicz purchased the boat in 1980 and spent 10 years reconstructing the vessel so it would be able to weather his planned "around-the-world". expeditions.
Beginning in 1991, Captain Wasowicz and his crew navigated the Antica to South America, around Cape Horn, to Asia and then back to North America and finally home to Gdansk. He will be on board the Antica when it is docked at the Esplanade on the Nautical Mile, Woodcleft Avenue, to answer questions. For further information, contact 377-2246. •

Budget presented at Freeport School Board meeting
by Mark Treske
The 2004-2005 school budget, approved formally last Tuesday, took up much of a Freeport school board meeting on Wednesday Night at Atkinson School. Giving the latest of several presentations of the budget. Assistant Superintendent for Business Kishore Kuncham seconded Superintendent Dr. Eric Eversley's description of the Budget as responsible, and the product of extensive review by the board and the District Budget Financial Committee.
The 2004-2005 expenditure budget is $112,772,779, an increase of $7,577,362 or 7.2%. There are three parts of the expenditure budget: In the capital portioii, Mr. Kuncham noted an
increase of between $1-1.1 million, and described the need for roof replacement at Dodd and the Technical Wing of the high school, a new basement sump pump at the high school and a districtwide building condition survey.
Noting that other repair issues exist at other schools, and that the previous bond issue was used to create classroom space, Mr. Kuncham pointed towards a possible need of a future bond issue, noting that a new state rule amortizing reimbursement for capital projects make bonding more necessary for such repairs.
The largest mcrease is the program component, a rise of $5,769,093 to $86,835,319. Included in thkt increase is contractual salaries (up $2,160,000), special education ($804,000) and additional staff ($555,000). The extra staff
was necessitated by program needs and mandates, and includes four English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers, a registered nurse, a science research teacher for the high school (to further new scientific research programs) two special assignment teachers (English Language Arts/mathematics) one special education , one dual language and 1/5 music and 1/5 art teacher for New Visions. A $3,143,000 increase was reported for "fringe costs," which includes health insurance and retirement costs, two required items which have risen steadily in recent years (this last elicited a reference to."pensioii millionaires" by gadfly Alan Jay), i
On the revenue side, an increase of $1,786 million was reported, although a
