N.W. Civic hosts school board candidates

On Thursday, April 29, the Northwest Civic Association offered a forum for the. four candidates for the Freeport School Board to appeal for the community's support in the May 18 election. As per the customary format of the Northwest Civic Candiates Forum, the candidates delivered opening and closing statements, in between which they answered questions submitted by the audience.
Incumbent Mike Raab spoke of his experience as a successful businessman and a teacher at Nassau Community College. Describing his three years on the board as a great honor, he observed that in spite of many hard times aiid difficulties, much has been accomplished and the board has worked well with a solid administration. Challenger Steve Pouyat, a' longtime Freeporter, expressed his love for our "exciting, vibrant community." He listed his experience in civic activism (South of Sunrise Civic Association, POWER committee, village School Budget Committee and Overoccupancy Committee). Although the schools are doing weU, Mr. Pouyat expressed his concern over high taxes, the image that the district is projecting, and unlawful entry of students from outside the district.
Challenger Debra McQuillan described her life here as "a love story with Freeport," and spoke about her involvement as a parent volunteer (two years as president of the PTA council, as well as a member of the School Budget Conmiittee). In these jobs, she has worked closely with the school dis^ trict. Ms.
McQuillan promised to work to serve all interests, and said, "I beUve in civili-

ty" and working hard to get a job done.
Incumbent Dr.. Joseph Cattano then offered what he called "news from the dark side." He described his misgivings about another term on the board owing to the large time commitment and the frustration over working very hard and being unable to please everyone.

Questions
Taxes - Dr. Cattano pledged to do "Everything-1 can," and expressed concern over health care costs and overoccupancy, but cautioned against scapegoat-ing overoccupany for very complicated financial issues. He also observed that people should understand the link, between expectations of district programs and the necessity of paying for them.
Mr. Pouyat referred to his experience : as ,ah insurance .agent and spoke of the need to' i sciiltinize, ;fiinge benefits and their;effect on taxes.,^JVIs- McQuillan mentiohed; her work on the budget committee ajid called oh the district to be vigilant about district expenses. She supported the Ktea of a Tax Reform Committee to deal with the bigger issues, saying "etMugh smallpeople can make a change."
