Kate Murray, the first female elected Supervisor of Hempstead Town, was installed in an induction ceremony in Town Hall on Monday.
She declared that her election in November was a victory for all women. While saying she wil| "continue to be a forceful advocate for all residents," she hopes that young women will see her election as proof that they can achieve their goals, even in jobs once held only by men.
Supervisor Murray said, "Women, indeed all persons who confront obstacles, should never accept" past restrictions "in pursuing dreams and aspirations."
Before she become the town's first female chief executive, she was the first woman state Assemblymember for the 19th Assembly District, covering much of Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Freeport and Baldwin. The district now covers most of Seaford as well.
Ms. Murray said her "administration's agenda includes efforts to enhance the quality of life experience for all residents, increased programs
to protect the environment and initiative to support economic growth and vitality."
She declared that "a defining moment in the town's environmental history was the conversion of a landfill into the award-winning Norman Levy Preserve [in Merrick]. Building upon a proud legacy, I am pleased that we have just begun work on the town's newest nature preserve in Lido Beach."
Supervisor Murray said that "alternative energy usage is another area where our town is leading the way. We have harnessed wind power at the Levy Park and we have installed fuel-cell technology at the town's animal shelter" in Wantagh.
She noted that the town is "in the midst of a $40 million parks enhancement initiative, adding new play structures, resurfacing basketball and tennis courts and upgrading playing fields."
Newly-elected Town Clerk Mark Bonilla of Seaford was sworn in for his first full term after being appointed in March. He is the first Hispanic-American Town Clerk, and succeeded Ms. Murray in the
position.
Town Councilmember Angie Cullin (Fifth Council District) was also inducted after being re-elected in November. She told the gathering of officials and other well-wishers, "This is a very exciting time for the Town of Hempstead. While officials in other areas lack resources to advance their agendas, we in Hempstead will continue to enhance the services that we provide, in order to improve the life enjoyed by our residents."
She expressed her thanks to "all the men and women of the Freeport Republican organization for their support. You are always there for me, and I will always be there for you." .
"From work on the town's nature preserves to projects to expand and revitalize our downtown areas, while continuing our conservative fiscal policies, the future looks bright in the Town of Hempstead."
