Volunteers for Baldwin Honored
HONOREES: Joan Delaney and Marie Jensen.
by Paul Laursen
Friends, fans and family members flocked to the Baldwin High School Commons Saturday to honor Joan Delaney and Ma^e Jensen for their efforts on behalf of the Baldwin schools.
They were honored by the Baldwin Foundation for Education (BFE), which BFE President Sheila Cohen, a 1947 BHS graduate, noted •is "an organization of alumni and friends of the Baldwin public schools."
She said that "we are here to honor . two special people": The Leader's Baldwin editor Joan Delaney, and Marie Jensen, a physical education teacher in Baldwin for 35. years and director of the Physical Education Department in the high school.
President Cohen noted that the BFE awards mini-grants up to $400 to teachers "for class projects such as a middle school weather station, a World War n essay competition and equipment to test groundwater in Baldwin.
"Maxi-grants are for projects that cross • over • grades: Meadow's schoolwide character education, elementary schools' classroom' libraries, Shakespeare at Shubert.
"Our database now contains over
19,000 alumni names, almost 15,000 with current addresses, under the watchful eyes of; Bill and Miriam Kloer Fay. It is an enormous task!" • The BFE • has awarded over $20,000 in scholarships and over $115,000 in grants since its inception iii 1992, "for a total of about $145,000 that the BFE has given to Baldwin schools, students and staff," Mrs. Cohen noted.
Marie Jenseti
Ina Fletcher, Ms. Jensen'-s colleague and friend, introduced her, noting that"someone once said that excellence is never an accident. It is the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, skillful execution and the vision to see obstacles as opportunities. .
"Ho\y aptly this statement fits when we start to describe a woman who personifies excellence and the Baldwin spirit..." At the high school, "she taught students to think for themselves, have confidence in what they beheved in and value in who they were." The physical education "program was a wonderful one where Marie could use her; many-faceted talents.
