MISTRESS OF CEREMONIES Florence Bell, co-president of the Black Educators' Committee of Freeport and a teacher at Freeport High School, introduced the many performances of students from throughout the district at the recent Black History Program.
Performers from kindergartners to high school seniors, plus faculty and members of the community too, came together to celebrate "Solidarity" in recognition of Black History Month. The program, held at Bay view Avenue School on a recent Sunday, was sponsored by the Black Educators' Committee of Freeport.
Co-presidents of the Committee, Freeport High School teacher Florence Bell and librarian Carol Gilliam, welcomed a crowd of parents and community members to the rousing event that honored the accomplishments of famous African-Americans, and demonstrated the poetic and musical accomplishments of Freeporters! In addition to students, performers included membefs of the Dance Arts Repertory, the Operation Pride Gospel Group, and piano acconnpanist Dave Opatow, .director of the Freeport Memorial Library,,
Displaying photos of, famoMi Black Americans, Columbus Avenue School kindergai-iners sang "We Appreciate You»", coiiiplete wiih choreographed moves. Performances 'from children who attend Freeport's magnet schools,'included poetry readings, folk songs, and jostJ'Umehtai solos. Atkinson students treated Jiie audience to a skit, "Let's Come Together," and a ra|> about Martin Luther King. Students from Freeport High School showed versatility with darices, and ^n original song written, sung and played on the guitar by FHS student Cassey Anne June.
