Candidates vie for State legislature
18th Assembly District:
Robert W.Harris, Sr.
. Robert W. Harris, Sr., a retired New
York City Housing Police lieutenant
and now pastor of Grace Temple in
Uniondalc, is the Rqjublican candidate
inthe 18lh Assembly District
Rev.. Harris, a member and former
commissioner of the Nassau County
Parole board and Crithinal Jiistice
Coordinating Council who has spent 22
years in the law enforcement field, said
the issues of drugs and crime seem to
be foicmo^ among local concerns.
The candidate favors tougher laws
and stiffer sentences for drug related
crime, but also would introduce
programs with the prison population
"that will be more inclined to
rehabilitate rather than merely house."
A twice .weekly visitor to the County
jail, he says he would introduce
• legislation that would earmark a
specific portion of the proceeds'of
confiscations for local; programs
dealing with education and drug
prevention. . '
Rev. Harris pronjises to be "a
leader" in pulling instiuitions such as
churches,- colleges, businesses and
governthent into needed efforts to
construct affordable housing.
Earlene Hill
Eariene Hill, Democratic incumbent
in ihe 18th A.D., was elected to the
Assembly in a special election in
March, 1988, and subsequently reelected.
She is the only black woman
representing a suburban district
"Drags are the single most impoitant
. problem facing the health and lives of
our children," she said, adding that she
has funded a program to fight drug
dealing in Freeport's Moxey Rigby
Housing Project and provided drug
prevention, treatment and education
programs.
. Ms. Hill said she has been active in
day care legislation, arid has restored
money to fund Youth Employment
Trailing Programs to work with at-risk
youth. Ms. Hill stated she has
developed economic revitalization
programs to bring jobs back to Freeport
and Hempstead.
Ms. Hill is pro-choice on the abortion
issue, understanding "that the
fundamental decision about abortion
belongs to women and their families,
not to the government"
She said her legislative priorities also
include securing increased Slate
funding for local school districts,
affordable housing and protecting the
cnviroiunent
19th Assembly District
