State approves loan for Freeport's urban renewal project

community spirit generated by an
extensive renovation project - .
The village's optimism stems from
the State Legislature's rnxnt approval
of a plan to borrow $2 million from the
proceeds of the Fireman's Held sale to
; help finance an oveitiaul of the blighted
. Freeport Plaza WKI area.
Fireman's Field sale
Originally, all proceeds from the sale
werp supp(^ed to go toward parks and
recreation but the 1986 esUmated value
of the site more than doubled and the
Held was sold in 19S8 for S4.2 million,
prompting vilbge officials to seek State
approval of a loan to defray, the cost of
the renewal project .

will-use S2.2 million for parks and-recreation,

Assemblywoman Earlene'Hill, who "
co-sponsored the legislation with state
Senator Norman Levy, said, "lam
delighted to be able to secure this .
. funding for Freeport. Freeport Plaza •
, West is badly in need of jmprovanent,
and this money will help to.achieve this
•goal." ; -
Improved community
Mayor Storm said, "This legislation
and the successful completion of the
Plaza Urban Renewal'Plan assures an
enriched qiiality of life in the future
: with a commiunent toward enhancing
- recreatfon and parks throughoiit the
commnnity." -
-The estimated.S? million urban -
renewal project involves the acquisition
. and demolition of about I7-buildings
and the relocation of businesses and
residenls. The property would then be.

officials, only an office building has
been planned so far, but stores and
housing are other possibilities. -
Mayor Stbrm said, "Freeport is now
assured of the rcyiialization of our
downtown-railroad station area. This
removal of blight prepares our.

but employment opportunities and an'
increased tax base."
Adding to Freeport's new appearance
are propiosed improvements at parks
and pools, expansion of Recreation
Center parking, a new Ice rink,,
b'ulkheading of two waterfront
municipal parks and a new swimming
pool at Martin Luther King Paik.
County settles 'illegal searchVsuit

Two Freeport families have been
paid $40,000 in settlement of their suit
against. 20 ^police officers and-detcctives
arid the'police depanifients
of New York Oty, Nassau County and
. the Village of Freeport, over allegedly
Illegal raids and searches of their
' homes four years ago.
.Underlying the .suit, filed in the
United Slates District Court, was the ,
. constitotional protection against

constitutions of both the United Stales
and New Yoik State:

Al Dorfman of Freeport, 20 officers
