For Freeporter Louise Simpsoh.the
historic first visit together of Nelson
and Winnie Mandela to the U.S. last
weekend was a spiritual h i^ point of
her.life. • . • . - ' . • ,
She was iii the first of 20'busIoads
that left Hempstead with a police escon
to the coimty line, ooeofmaiy caught' -
op in the excitement of actually seeing -
Nelson Mandela, whom many never
. expected to'be released from South
Afiiean jails.
.' "After 27 years, hfr finally wialked
out of Jail, free and yet h6t free," as
long as there is a policy iii Sooth Afticai -
that does hot allow the principle of
"one man one vote," she said. - T
Nelson Mandela lived ap to her
. expecutions orhim as a hero, "his.
gentleoess^his whole ,demeanor^ was
contagious, she said. And crowds.at;
' Yankee Stadium waited patiently lo see

Drn'mi added to- the mood of
celebration, in which "after so many
years, you can finally see the light at
the end of tlie tunnel -- freedom for'
South Africa." she exulted.
While Nelson Mandela "permeates
nonnolence," she found him strong for
his age, despite years of hard labor
during incarceration, and very well.
prqared. needing noprompting cards
'. like many of today's pplitidans.
Hie reception for Winnie Mandela as.
- the Brooklyn Academy of Muac was a
chance for Mrs. Simpson to see a
woman she bad admired for many'
- years, a. "beautifiil woman" who was
"the buffer on the outside all these
years" and developed a "regal attitude"
despite government efforts to make her
.-and otba blacks feel subservient
- Mrs..Simpson, who is also Long
Island.Regional birectot of the.
NAACP, noted the theme of the visit is
not jost rejoicing bot keeping the
pressure on. antil Sonlb Africa
recognizes the principle of "one man,
one vote." She said American blacks
must remember that voting is also
important for them.
. Americans who want an .end to
apartheid should not just wait for
government to impose sanctions or
companies to divest but should impose '
their own persotial sanctions and refuse
to buy goods from companies that have
interests there, she said. "You have to
live with yourself." she ctHicluded. '
