FHS team leads state
.• Freeport High School's Future
Problem Solving team has captured ..
first place in the second round at the
-State level of .the Future Problem
Solving' competition. The team.,
consisting of Brian DunUe; Michael
Fiore, Lynne LaCascia, Sonya Mathies,.
Nabyl Tejapi, and Harold Webb, is now
practicing for the third round. A
success there will send the team to the
State Championships.'
The team, made up of ninth and '
eleventh grade students, is coached by
two faculty members'from John W.
Dbdd Junior High School - English
teacher Claudia Ladd and Social
Stiidies Department Head Fredric
Hertzberg. who successfully coached
' some of these same students to the
1988-89 Slate Championship and on to
the International Problem- Solving
Conference held in Ann Arbor,
Michigan.'
The current team's second round

distributed it as a model to every sclraol
in New Votlc State participating in the
Future .Problem Solviiig Program,
identifying it as "what we consider to
be outstanding."

Ray Maguirc,. ex-captain of Engine
Company 1 and a veteran Freeport
fircnghter, was elected to the oflice of
Chief of the Department at the annual
FFD elections held last Thursday, Afsil
5, at Fire Headquarters. Chief Maguire
was unopposed in the election for the
dcparunent's high^t position.
This is the culmination of a lifelong
dream for me," Chief Maguire •
said after the victory. "All my life. 1
have woiked to reach this day, and to
be the Chief of the finest group of
volunteer firefighters anyone could
' find. I look forward to leading the-.
department in th^ year ahead, and I am
grateful to all the members of the
department for their outstanding vote of
conlidence."
Chief Maguire has been an active
Frcqxut fiieflghter for many years and
has served on a multitude of company
and department activities. In addition
•'he is.an officer with the Freeport
Chamber of Commerce ajnd has been
extremely active in supporting Village'
and Fife Depaitroent progi^ns with the
public. •
Ray's popularity is well known, even
beyond Freepoit's borders. One chief of
a neighboring department said
"Freeport is extremely fortunate to
. have an individual m\h the experience
and qualifications Ray has as their
leader. Heshould niake a great chief for

• Ray resides on South-Bayview

Liberty Park playground set for summer completion
. Plans for the relocation of the Liberty
Park Playground to a parcel of land at
the rear of Frecporl'sGieater Second
Baptist Church are underway, with a-tin^
bid award scheduled for April 30.
The project would be compleud in 75

"Durascape" for young children

straight Side, and for older youngsters,

for mothers to relax while thdr children'

exceeding $200,000 will be paid from
the proceeds of. the sale of Fireman's
Field that is eaim^ked for a recreation
re-use.
