Bierwirth bids Freeport farewell; will head Sachem district
Fr«port Superintendent of
Schools Dr. John E. Bierwirth
told The Leader early
this wc«k that he has accepted
an offer to take over the
helm of the Sachem School
District.
With over 17,000 students.
Sachem is the largest district
on Long Island, and the sixth
largest in New York State.
In his new post. Dr. Bier*
wirth will oversee 1,200
teachers in 16 schools serving
the Tbwns of Brookhaven and
Islip, and a portion of Smith-town.
The appointment takes
effect Fcbniary 1, exactly the
ninth anniversary of his coming
to Freeport.
The charismatic superintendent
has made a name for
himself both in his profession,
as head of the region's
superintendents' association,
and in the community as a
frequent guest at business
and civic group functions,
including the Freeport
Exchange Club.
He has been naturally suited
to leading a progressive
district, giving enthusiastic
support for many projects,
such as the school-business
partnership.
He has worked hard to
improve the scholastic stand-ing
of Freeport graduates
and has enjoyed being able to
share the good news of how
much better students are
of leadership, getting people
to accept new ideas as their
owTi, as a doctoral student at
the University of Massachusetts
working in__ a
Worcester area school district
to introduce a new program.
He is a Yale graduate, like
his father, John C. Bierwirth,
Dr. John E. Biervrirth
doing now in Freeport, in
contrast to the nation's dowTi-ward
trend.
He also has token care to
keep athletic fields and buildings
well maintained through
a sensible program of ongoing
renovation, but uith no 'gold
plated bathroom fixtures," as
he sometimes jests.
Most recently, he was honored
by Nassau County Boy
Scouts for promoting Exploring,
a co-ed program for
young adults to learn about
possible careers. He was
named a board member of a
national coalition of citizens
scholarship foundations and
has been helping set up one
for Freeport.
Dr. Bierwirth's stylo in
dealing with crises, such as a
discovery of asbestos in a
school just prior to opening.
has been to provide the community
uith all the facts and
seek a consensus on a solution.
School board meetings
have rarely been copfronta-tional
during his tenure,
because of his policy of ope-ness.
He learned his special style
