More security at Baldwin station
by Joan Delaney
As a result of tocreases in auto
theft and \-aDdalism at the Bald*
win Long Island Rail Road station
and a request by SUte Sena*
torNonnanLevy forstepped-up
patrols, police ofTicen from the
First Precinct have increase sur-
NTtllance near the station.
According to sutements made
by a public formation o^ker at
the First Precinct, regular patrols
have been increased and
unmarked cars by extra men on
roll call arc being used. In addition,
mounted police on hones
will be used so that areas between
parked cars can be seen more eas-liy.
LIRR police ha« also
stepped up their patrols.
According to police offtcers.
the number of thefu and the
degree of vandalism has
decreased since the patrols began.
As wth all such patrols. howc\-er,
it was noted that criminals tend to
mo\'e to other areas when i h^
recognize that a particular area b
recei«ng more intense protection.
For that reason, officers of
the First Precinct have been
asked to ride through aU4rain stations
in their area, particularly
when they go to and from the
Fnt Prccina to "gas up their
cars." This form of increased
patrol has also proNTd to be effective
in providing additional
police prcseiKC.
In discussing safety, it was
noted that can parked during the
day. particularly if they have an
alartn system, seem to be rela-ti
«ly secure. However, new criminal
techniques for breaking locks
quickly make it difTicuU at night
when railroad stations are rela-ti\-
cly deserted.
''^iRegarding home safety, police
ofTicials remind residents to uke
proper precautions during \-aca-tions
spent away from home.
They urge the use of timers to
turn tights on and o^, having
lawns mowed if the hooKOwnen
will be away for an extended
period of time, slopping nenv
paper delivery and having mail
held at the post office or taken to
by a neighbor. The bat defense
against theft, they noted, is a
house that looks li%-ed in.

Janice Jijioa. an expert on
shopping-center demography,
stated that the Meadowbrook
has been designed to attract
shoppers from about a three-mile
radius or a lO-minute car ride
which would draw on a population
of about 80,000 from contiguous
communities. Greg Saunders,
a Phillips Associates partner,
