they knew just what to do.

rescue Frank, who had sut>-
merged several times.
Frank, none the worse for «-ear
after his frightening experience,
was a "little trouper," said the
girls' mother. Eileen. Of her
daughters, she declared. "I'm so
proud of them. They did just the
right thing,"
Freeport honors astronaiJts
Memorial Day 1989 in
Pre«port will be a gala event
dedicated to the nation's
deceased astronauu featuring
four divisions of marchers led
by Astronaut Commander
William Shepherd as grand
marahall, formal ceremonies
at the Freeport Memorial
Library, and a special film
showing and dedication at
Prteport High School.
Marchers will assemble
Monday, May 29, at 9:30 a.m.
at South Brookside Avenue
facing west at FHS. and the
parade will step off promptly
at 10 ajn. Maixhera will proceed
south on South Brookside
Avenue to Merridt Road, then-east
to the Library. Leading
the marchers will be Commander
Shepherd. Parade
Chairman Charles Jackson of
tha Winias^ Gtinton^tory
Poet Ameiican Legion, Mayor
Dorothy Storrs, and local dig-nitariea.
World War I veUr-ana,
Datu^tera of tha American
RevoIutioQ and Freeport
G<dd Star Mothera.
'HMI parade and ceremonies
will include performancea by
the Freeport H.S. Select
Chorale, the FHS and Dodd
Marching Bands, tha Atkinson
School Band and Our Holy
Redeemer School Marching
Band. In addition, a 140-piece
marching unit comprised of
fourth grade instrumental students
from Archer, Bayview
and Giblyn Schools will participate.
Expected to march are color
guards from the U.S. Marine
Corps and Coast Guard
Reserve, members of the
William Clinton Story Post
American JSegion, Henry
'nieodore>lohr Post Veterans
of For«igii Wars, Henry Morrison
Deloney Post American
Legion and Nassau Cadets
Squadron Civil Air Patrol.
Also expected are the Recreation
Center Twirlers, youth
groups including scouts and
Freeport Little League, and
numerous civic, religious and
business groups. *
Bringing up the rear of the
parade will be the Freeport
Fire Department's Qand,
Chiefs, Marching Unit and
Fire Department appsn^^tia.
Ceremoaiea at the library
will begin at approximately
10:45 a.m. highlighted by
remarka by Cotmnander Shepherd,
musical selections, and
laying of wreaths.
Special I p.m. ceremoniea
will be held at Freeport High
School's Auditorium where
Commander Shepherd will
introduce a-filHron the Uml*d
States Space Program, which
the public IS invited to view,
and dedicate a memorial "Wall
of Dreams" in the FHS Sci
ence Wng in remembrance of
deceased astronauts. Commander
Shepherd's appearance
in Freeport was arranged
by FHS science teacher
Harold KeithUne, who ser\'ed
with the astrocaut in Jbe ILS.

ceremonies will be held in the
FHS Auditorium at 10:30 a.m.
Baldwin parade
Baldwin's Memorial Day
Parade will kick off at approximately
10a.m. Monday. May 29.
from Cart A\*enue and proceed
down Grand Avenue to Silver
Lake Park for ceremonial services
and presentation of parade
awards. Observances are being
sponsored by Baldwin^ Ameri-'
can Lepoa Post 24&
Mardben win iochxie veteran,
church and school groups, the
Baldwin Hre Department, the
Baldwin Historical Society, Bay
Colony, boy scouu and girl
scoots, Baldwin PAL and other
sports groups, the Baldwin
Ubfiry, and the Junior and
Senior Hi^ School Marching
Bands.
Baldwin budget tonight's topic

The Baldwin Board of Education
met on Wednesday e\-ening.
May 17, but the recent defeat of
its I9S9-90 proposed budget »-aj

and the Board's response to the
budget defeat will be scheduled
instead for Thursday. May 25. At
that time, the Board will hav^

At the Board meeting of May
17. the agenda included presentations
by staff members on two
topics - the teacher mentor program
and the revison of elemer>-
lary level report cards.
The teacher mentor program,
which is applauded by the Sute
and for which grant monies are
available, is focused on providing
outsta,oding experienced teachers
as mCDtors for first time teachers.
Superintendent of Schools Gene
Lazaro noted that the disinct has
many excellem teachers but ihdr "
impact U felt mostly on students
raiher than on other teachers.
