in the Freeport Chamber
of Commerce first annual
window painting contest
which resulted in a colorful
holiday display for South
Main Street storefronts.
A difficult task faced
judges, Hempstead Town
Coundlwoman Angie Cullin,
Chamber artist Lu MoUzen
and Freeport Leader sta/Trr
Sue Morgan, as they perused
the vivid array of Christmas
trees, Chanukah menorahs,
wreaths, stoddngs and snowmen
gracing the Freeport
shqjping district.
In th« second grade category
ftrst place went to
Bayview for a bold sponge
painted tree and candy cane
at Barasch's Kids' Store.
Bayview kids also took second
place for a menorah at
Irvinff s Men's Shop.
Transfiguration tooSt the
lop award in the third grade
category for a snowy scene
above 69 South Main featuring
a large wreath made from
outlines of the children's
hands. Bayview won second
priie for snowmen pointed nt
Lloyds Jewelers-
The top prire for fourth
graders went to Bayview for
a toy-laden Christmas stocking
at Irving's. Second pnio
was won by OHR fourth
graders for their creche scene
at Amantina Fashions.
The contest's chairman,
Michael Byrne, expressed
thanks to School Principals
Tbny Duahamel of Bayview,
George Hirsch of Transfiguration,
and Sister Mary
^^Iliom Postauer, O.P., of
OHR for encouraging their
students' participation.
The Chamber will award
prizes of $30 for first place
winners, and $20 for second
place winners.

change. It's not the antithesis
of violence. It's not in competition
with violence. And violence

uplifting discussion about the
meaning of non-vi<^ence.

a state-funded organization
that seeks to educaie

Abandoning his prepared
lecture. Dr. LafayetU turned
his attention to the young
people in the audience. His
anecdotes about the strugi^es
of Black Americans to sit in
the front of a public bus, to
eat at public lunch counters,
served ns a moving history
lesson to the rapt listeners.
Not a state of miod
"Non-violence is not a state
of mind," said Dr. Lafayette.
"U IS not enough to say, jn
the face of a violent art, 'we
stood around and did nothing,
because *f are non-violent
