54th YEAR, NO. 32 FREEPORT, NEW YORK THURSDAY, AUGUST 11, 1988 PRICE 2 5 * PER COPY
How the mighty have fallen!
Sixteen towerittg trees which lent a leafy, cool atmosphere
to mid-Freeport along Sunrise Highway have fallen before
the axe of a State Highway Department rule. The S u t e has a
'rule on its books that no "immovable object" can be located
within 10 feet of the highway. The tall prominent electric
poles which are closer have "break-away" capabilities,
authorities explain^
In an effort to mitigate the loss, the Village is planning to
replace the trees, but the new trees will hot be as large as the
originals, and will take time to grow. Meanwhile, th6re is a.
bare, hot look to the formerly pleasant lane.
No one in the State Highway Department has explained to
our satisfaction why through-traffic should barrel along so
fast through our village as to cause an accident, throwing
can or trucks up against trees along the sidewalks.
We do. note that the State legislature and governor have
recently agreed on a bill which will allow huge'trucks to
become six iriches wider, (102' from 96") so that interstate
trucks can more easily use our highways. Adding six inches
in width to each truck, with sometimes three alongside each
other could cause crowded conditions along Sunrise Highway.
It gives the drivers of small cars or even large cars and
sm.all vans reason to shudder.
