The "Lady Edna"
christened Sunday

The "Lady Edna," the newest
of three boats owned by Captain
Michael Danon, was christened
Sunday morning, July 17.
About twenty people showed
up at the "Poop Deck," a lounge
at the beginning of'Wooddeft
Canal in Freeport, just before 9
a.m. Sunday to witness the tiadi-tional
ribbon-cutUng and cham- -
pagne bottle-breaking that
accompanies a boat christening.
Although Captain Danon was
not on hand for the ceremony, his.'
partner. Captain John Ross,was.
Captain Ross stood by Mayor
Dorothy Storm as she broke the
champagne bottle over.the rail of
the ship. .
Mr. Danon got his start in the
boating business when be was
about nine years old, said his
mother, Letsel Danon.
Maurtcfc Danon, his father,
said Captain Danon used to go
out on the boats of "Captain
Lou," Louie DeBassio of
Lindenhunt.
"He learned everything from
him," Mr. Danon said of bis son.
Captain Lou bad promised
Captain Danon that he could
have his boat after he died, Mr.
Danon said.
But, he said. Captain Lou had
forgotten to sign the wilt. Captain
Danon then bought the boafwith
8,000 dollars he had saved, and
started hts own business.
After a year, he could not
accommodate everyone who
wanted to ride on hisboat, so he
bought another one that could
hold up to 7S passengers, Mr.
Danon said.
Captain Danon and his
partner now own three boats, and
he is also involved in a daily ferry
service between Long Island and
Manhattan fpr.co^imuters, hi*,

The "Lady Edna" was named
after Edna Bettt«rick, the owner
of thePolopOeck.
"She's a unique character in
our village," Mayor Storm said.
Mrs. Beitterick has owned the
Poo^ Deck with her husband for

Street in Freeport 460 feet south
of Fourth Stjftrt,

of a 7.S83 acre site where there are
now a racquet club, bar, restaurant,
a retail store and a marina.
They will be replaced by i63
homes and 63 boat slips to be
used by future occupants in what
is to be a Homeowners Associa-
' tion. Part of the area is to be
lockscaped and landscaped.
There will be parking space for
143.cars.
Since the property is located
between the Village line an^Jthe
bay, it willjjeed to use Freeport.

In a long-awaited decision, the
Baldwin. Board ,of Education
approved the appointment of
Ranier William Melucd as principal
of Baldwin S>emor High
School, The annouiicement was
made at the July 13 Board of
Education meeting which was
attended by staff and community
members including John
• MeGrath,-Science chainnan of
Baldwin S.H.S.; Joan Flatley.
special education teacher at the
high school; Doug Gomez, librarian
at the high school; Aiithony
Lombardo, high school chemistry
teacher and president of the
Baldwin Teachers' Association;
Ann Edson, principal of Plajca
School; BEA members Bob Jordan
(fonner Board of Education
member) and Bill Athas (also a
library Board. Trustee), and
Maureen Stastchin, President of
iheBaMvrinSHS-PTA.
Mr. Melucd was introduced to
the audience, who in turn
introdutsd themselves to him.
Gene Lanzaro, Superintendent
of Schools, also read a statement
which explained the selection
process as well as Mr. Melucci's
credentials.
