Two veteran Freeport firefighters vie for third deputy chief
Two veteran Freeport firefighters
have announced their intentions
to run for the position of
Third Assistant Chief of the
Department in the annual
department-wide elections scheduled
for Thursday,April 7. The
Third Assistant Chiefs positon is
the only spot on the ballot where
a competitive, race is scheduled;
other chiefs are running unopposed
for their respective
offices.
The two candidates are James
Butler, Ex-Ca^Uin of Bayview
Hose Co. 3, and Kevin Noll of
Patriot Hose Co. 4.
Janws Butler
Mr. ButJer joined Hose 3 in
1973, serving IS yean with tht
departinent He served twice as
.company captain(l97S and 1981)
and ha* anuased six yeah as
Warden on the Fire CouiicU. He
has also served for ten years as
department instructor and Just
recently completed theO.S.H.A.
Instructors'Course. ,
He...has also served-on the
department budget, training,
hose, campugn, installation and
awards comnutteet. He is an
active member of the department's
Softball Jteam.
Mr. Butler is employed as a
New York City firefighter, where
he has worked for seven years,
assigned to a company in
Brooklyn.
A Freeport resident for 23
years, Mr. Butler graduated from
Freeport High School in 1973.
He lives in South Freeport, with
his wife, Debbie, and son.

Kavin Noll
Mr. Noll joined Hose 4 in 1973
also, and has a similar time of
'experience (IS years) with the
departinent. He has served as
company captain twice (1979 arid -
1982) and is Warden on the Fire
Council. Mr. Noll was selected ki
the Departnwiit^ Fireman of the
Year in 1984, and Is also the recipient
of a Class HI award fitMn the
department, and the Bronze
Medal of Valor from the Nassau
County Fire Commission.
Mr. Noll is employed by the
Village as a police officer for the
Frepport Police Department,
where he worked for the past
seven years.
Alife-long Freeport resident,
Mr. Noll resides in Freeport with
his wife Adrianne. He is the
nephew of William J. • Noll,
former Fire Department Chief.
Unopposed
Running unopposed in the
elections for the following positions
are: Richard Holdener,
Chief of the Department; Julie
Ellision, First Assistant Chief;
and Ray Maguire, Second
Assistant Chief.
All elected serve in their respective
positions for one year.

In a combined effort of the
Freeport and Nassau County
Police Forces and the Nassau
County- .District Attorney's

officers swept through the Village
during pre-dawn and early morning
hours Tuesday in an opera-.
tion specifically aimed at Free-port's
crack -and street drug .
problem.
Narcotics rwds conducted at,
numerous Freeport locations
were the culmination of almost
four months of undercover work
by a Freeport Police unit under
the coiiiinand of Lieutenant
-Arthur Bmdette in coopesatioA
with the Nusau County Police
Department's Bureau of Special
Opeprtions and spcicia) units of
the D.A.^ Office.

Armed with over 70 indictment
warrants for the arrest of alleged
drug pushers, police hit the following

Freeport Police Department report: crime, ah'ests up in '87
'. Major crimes committed in
Freeport increased during 1987,
but so did arrests made by the
Freeport Police, according to the
recently released annual report of
the Department. <
As reported by. thie Federal
Bureau of Investigation, 2,181
major crimes, took place in,the
Village during 1.987, compared
with 1,899 in 1986. While many
categories remained relatively'
steady, the incidence of larcetiies,
in amount over S20O jumped
from 46S in l986 to 690 in 1987,
and autp thefts-increased from
190inl986to267inl987.Thel3
rapes and I SI robberies which
took'placc in the Village last year
reipreseht a slight decrease over
the previous year. There were
three cases of murder or manslaughter
during 1987, and 73
" 'assaults.
. Arrests made during the past
year numbered 1,072, compared
with 964 arrests made during
. 1986, Larceny arrests jumped
from 74 in 1986 to 120 in 1987,
and drug arrests increased from
203 in 1986 to 229 in 1987. Wea-pdns
and prostitution arrests also
rose in 1987, but arrests for simple
assault and DWI were down
during the year. Five arrests were
' made for murder or manslaugh^
ter, five for lape. and 40 for
robbery during 1987, relatively
unchanged from the' previous
year.
Police officers aided 1,027 persons
in cases ranging.from dog
bites, fractures and bums to
strokes, stab wounds and rape.
Aided cases during 1986 numbered
607. •
The report lists the value of lost
and stolen property at $3^27,623
for 1987 comiiared - with just
under S2 million in 1986. Motor
veUcles stolen numbered 267,
and 82 were tMoyered.
Total iiumtier of aided cases
involving motor vehicles during
the year was 3,713. There were
796 incidents of personal injury,
and one falality in 1987. Not surprisingly,
the largest number of
accidents occurred during the
hours of'8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Involved, in motor vehicle accidents
were-1,308 non-resident
operators and 1,273 resident
operators.
Locations at which most accidents
occurred were. Sunrise
Highway and South Long Beach
Avenue, and Merrick Road and
Cuy Lombatdo Avenue with 27
incidents each. Other locations
cited were Atlantic and Cuy
Loffibarda- Avenues with 2^,
Sdnrise Highway' and Henry
Street with'2S. Snmise Highway
and Church Street with 24, and
the Albany Avenue, Merrick and
Mill Road triple intersection with
23.

shows held during the year.
Fighting the drug problem hai
been and will continue to be a top
priority with the Department,
Police Ctuef Joseph King told the
Uader. Chief King .said that
because the dnig probletn is
beyond the'scope of local police,
the eommniuty would see a
widened cooperation of efforts
between the Department- and
County, State and. Federal law
enforcement agencies, as well as
the District Attorney's Office in
fighting the war against drugs
and related crimes.
Chief King said the Department
had experienced imprpVHl
community relations, resulting in
a higher quality of information
received, from an increased
liiimber of people willing to come
forward with information relating
to drugs. In turn, he said, ttus
hu led to a higher quality of
arrests.
