.A^aitimerit fire leaves 60 homeless

Some 60 persons are driven
froin their homes and numerous

an early morning fire caused
heavy damage to the east wing of
an apaitinent house at S2 Russell
Place, Febniary 17.
The fire, which started in
apartment 2F on tKe 2nd floor,

Chief Richard Holdeoer soon
arrived to find heavy smoke and
fire showing bnjhe upper floors.
The fire had bypassed the third
floor and had broken out on the
fourth floor, destroying three
apartments and extending into
• the-cockloft (a dead space
lietweeu the apartaeat-calings
and the.rooO- Seting the magm>
tude of the fire and the posrible
life hazard in a four-itory building.
Chief Holdener requested
additional iladder companies
from Baldwin and Oceanside. A
"trench cut" was made in the roof
to prevent the fire from extending
to other areas of the building as

inside and up'the stairs. An

Power and services were shut oit
in the building, necessitating that
the entire structure be vacated.
Apartment resident Lottie
Bess was treated at the scene for -
smoke inhalation by the Freeport'
Rescue Squad.
The Red Cross was called to
provide assistance fof those fand-lies
burnt out of their homes,'and
shelter was provided at the Holy'
R^eemer Church located on
Pine Street Three firefighten'
leceived'miiim injurifs fighting'
the blaze and one civilian was
treated for sinoke inhalation.
Additional Baldwin and Ocean-side
units, along with the Point
Lookout/Lido foe departmeats,
weire called on tniitnal 'aid to"
iMJver Freeport firehouses.
