Nunley's Arnii^inents purchase offer receivecl
by Joan Deianey
Steve Lereari. one of the
brothers whose fanuly has owned
Nunley's Carousel on Sunrise
Highway since 1K4, has coti-firmed
the report that they have
" received' a" purchase oOet. The
offer, he noted, .is contingent
' upon tiiepropas^biiyer'k receiving
the ncoMsaty zoiung and variances
for tlie approximately four
. acre multi-zoned site.
.' Rumors had surfaced in recent
years about a pouibie sale, particularly
as costs of liability insurance
soared. Last year, in a conversation
with The Leader, it was
' noted that insurance had been
' secured and the establishment
would stay open at least another
year. This year, news. of an
impending sale resutrwted when
commntets who park at Nunleyls
received notices infonmiig them
that the faciUty w^uld pot be-available
for parking' after Sep-.
tember30,1988.
According to' Mr. Lereari, the
CarouserAffiuteteent Center was
opened by the Nunley family in
I939rln recent yean, however,
Mr. Lercari'stressed thediiTiculty
'in doing biisiaeu in the face of
rising costs. Pressed to comment
on the p^sible use io mind by the
proi|(M^ baytr, Mr. Lereari
vo^iotAif %xf that planr were
with this reporter regarding"
another Board of Zoning case;
was asked of his knowledge ofthe
proposed sale of NunlQr's, He
indicated his involvement with
the negotiations, but added tiuit
at this point disciussion was pre- •
mature. He added' that at the
proper time, he and the' proposed
buyer would meet with residents,
lay out their plans -and secure
input .
The site contains both com-merciiQ
and residential parcels of
land. The southern portion of the
property contains a buffer tone
of woods. Sdiith of that is a resi-dentialhome
also owned by Nun-leyV
If the entire portion of'
. property were to be tised, zoning
chan^ would be required.' In
addition, retidents in tUs area'
have been violent in recent years
in monhoring proposed zoning
changes wMch .would adversely
affect the residential nature of tte
area. As it stands now, the resi-dentiakjiprtioii
of the Kunley
property extends several hundnd ,
feet into residential zoning. '
Although not designated a
landmark, the Nunley^ Carousel
has become a tradition forlehild-ren
in Baldwin and the south
shore. It is even mentioned in the
Baldwin School District 4th
grade curriculum-booklet which
was comi»!ed by Glean Sitterly
of the Baldwin Historical Society
and forider Baldwin Pritieipal
Jack O'Connor. The Carouiells
opened daily in summera and on
tcDowned for the quafity of: its
faiaily amusement. On site man.-
ageibent by the Lereari family as \
resulted in it being preceived as a'
safe, family center. -
During the week, students,
from Freeport High School often -
eat at the restaurant associated
with the Carousel. In contrast to
problems at the Kfey Food Shop-pingi3eoter
in Bafdwin, there do
not seeia.lS_h^vc I>^D similar
complaints by residents regarding
Freeport High School student!
at the Vnaky fadlity.
Another impact of the pro^
poxd sale will be on commuters.''
According to' Mr. Lereari,
approximately 90 spaces are
rented to commuten at a cost of
SI SO per year. One commuter
said that she tad been inquiring
at< Kveral locations xmr the
LIRR for parking space and had
been quoted up to SiO per month.
Mr. Lereari said that the faiiuly
had notifled commuters early so
that they would have time to find'
other parking. ', «^->
Local stTMts in the LIRR vic>
inity contain irestricted two hour
parking so that commuters are
not able to park there for the station.
Spaces at the LIRR which
require a parking-tag are usually
filled eariy and space near the
Historical Sodety on i Grand
Avenue often becomes filled as
