recent Freeport Village Board Board of Trustees' meeting,
Mayor Dorothy Storm refuted several rumors about
area properties.

BALDWIN - Following a ceremony on June 30 honoring
the Baldwin School District's retirees. Superintendent
of Schools Dr. RoUand \V. Jones surprised the audience
by announcing his own retirement effective July
1, 1988. He noted that he was making this information

his replacement. Jones told
this reporter that he has
informed the Board of
various .methods whereby
that search process can be
. undertaken, and that it
would undoubtedly . include
consideration, of
candidates from both
within and outside the
district.

Jones'-tenure were marked
by community divlsiveness
over several reorganization

replacement of Board of
Education members
through the defeat of incumbents
and was marked
by the establishment of a
community group, whose
members picketed the
homes of ^School Board
members and engaged in
agressive tactics to prevent
perintendents. of Schools,/ the enactment of certain
replacing Dr. Fred Shore, reorganization plans,

about the two properties
"rumors," Mayor
Storm noted that there
•were even more.such rumors
circulating around
the .village.
She noted that she. had
been - questioned about
condominiums at. the A &
P site on Atlantic Avenue,
west of Bayview'Avenue;,
the property presently
occupied by Salty Bay
Yacht Club, on Westside
Avenue; and the Stadium
• property, the sale of
which to Wilbur Breslin
for stores is presently be-
• ing negotiated by the vil-
• lage. , .•
"There will be no more
condominiums," a'sserted
Mayor Storm. "This administration
will not re-zone
any more property
•for condominiums, particularly
with the water cap
still on us."
The Mayor was referring
to a cap on water usage
imposed on the village by
the New York State Department
of Environmental
Conservation.
The A & P. which shut
its doors about two weeks
ago, will, be leased to a
drug store . chain, the
Mayor- said. Salty ^ay
Yacht Club, she went on,
"will'not be rezoned for
condps;" to do so, she explained,
'would be "spot
zoning."
' Rumors about the future
of Salty Bay Yacht Cliib, a
popular club and catering -
establishment, have been
circulating for weeks.
Recently at least one local
organization, which always
holds its annual dinner-dance
at the facility, had
been turned down for
1988 with" the explanation
that the Yacht Club would
be closed after the 1987
Christmas - New Year's
holidays.
While much of the

both the elementary and
secondary level schools
made it -apparent that it
was necessary to close
schools. The question of
the racial imbalance at
certain schools at /that
time was also another
fact6r to consider.
The community had
previously noted its
agreement with the concept
of closing khools,
but the reality proved

Junior High School located
on.. Pershing Boulevard.
Since that time,- the
Prospect " Junior High
Schools complex as well as
the Coolidge School complex
were sold for con-domimun
type housing.
and the Harbor School was
converged for District Of-
' fice use. In addition,/ the
June 1987 vote resulted in
the sale of the Clyde Road
property in north-east

Class of 1987 preparing
for their June 21st Commencement
ceremonies,
announcements have been
made of scholarships and
other honors awarded.- to
them.
As of this date, nearly
two-thirds of the Senior
Class plans to go on to
higher education next
year. The.seniors have already
accumulated over a
half-million dollars in
