WESTBURY - Four local
students won awards
at the recent Vocational
Industrial Clubs of America
(VICA) New York
State Conference, held
April 29 - May 2, at the
Concord Hotel. The students
are enrolled in occupational
educational
courses at BOCES Nassau
Tech.
The VICA competitions
ace designed to promote
the development of lead-
. ership ability and job-related
skills.
Kathleen Severa and
Debbie Maffucci ace both
seniors at. Baldwin High
School. Kelly Bennett is a
senior at Freeport High
School, where Jamie
Rawlins b a junioj.
Severa, a second year
medical assisting student
at Nassau Tech in West-bury,
was part of a team
that took, first place for
their demonstration of the
VICA emblem ceremony.
Maffucci, also a second -
year medical assisting student,
took second place in
a skills competition that
called for taking blood
pressures and temperatures,
displaying knowledge
of business and lab
procedures and identifying
equipment.
Bennett took, third place
in the Commercial Phor
tography Contest; while
Rawlins took a third in
the Opening and Closing
Team Competition.

4:55 pm, at Rosedale Avenue
and Broadway, Vil-'
lage Police Officers
George Dowdell and
James Gallo arrested
James Peters, 31, of 1420
Grand Avenue,. Baldwin,
who was allegedly observed
buying two clear
plastic bags of marijuana.
The unidentified seller
fled, but Peters was
charged with ieriminal
possession of marijuana
fifth degree.
Later that same day, at
75 Graffing Place, Officers
Thomas Garnty and
Arthur Zimmer apprehended
Alonzo Whethers,
20, of 108 Liberty Park
Drive, Freeport, smoking
marijuana. Allegedly
Whethers was also in possession
of a clear plastic
bag of the substance, and
has been charged with
Criminal possession of
marijuana fifth degree
and criminal possession of.
a conttoUed substance
Seventh degree.
'At 7 pm, also on Friday,
Officers Gary Muniz,
Richard Murray and
Richard Walker apprehended
Kodel' S. Lucas,
18, of 6g Dehiihoff Street,
Freeport, in front of 64
Dehnhoff. The officers
were at the scene for another
matter, but allegedly
noticed that Lucas was in
possession of some clear
plastic bags believed to
contain marijuana. Lucas
has been charged with
criminal possession of
marijuana fifth degree.
On Monday afternoon,
May 4, at 1:50 pm, Offir
cers George Dowdell and
James Gallo allegedly observed
Alan Borsack, 6
Riviera Drive East, Mas-sapequa,
purchase a clear
plastic bag possibly containing
marijuana from
Reginald Key, 16, at
Freeport Plaza East and
Bensott.. Ayeniie., Borsack
was charged with criminal

ROOSEVELT - The 38-
year-old ex-Captain of
Freeport Fire Department
Hose Company No. 2 was
slain in Roosevelt early
Monday morniiig. May II
in an apparent robbery
attempt.
Kevin Vollmer, a delivery
man for Newsday, was
shot to death as he left the
Stop and Shop store on
Babylon Turnpike at 8:47
am. According to police,
the store was Vollmer's
fifth stop on his 37-slore
route. He had been collecting
receipts and had
just walked out of the
store, police say, when the
store : manager heard a
shot.
Vollmer, who had been
shot once in the face, was '
lying in a pool of blood.
At this time, police are
saying that Vollmer apparently
had walked from
the front of the store toward
his parked truck
when two men attempted
to rob him.
According to more-than
one local source, Nassau
Couaty detectives have
bSen questioning people bi
the area of the other stops
VoUmer made that morning
in an attempt to de-teraaioe
if any one noticed
if the victim had. been
followed.
Several Freeport residents
have also toW THE

about the deceased.
Police are now sending
out a description of a man
sought iii connection with
Vollmer's killing. The
. killer is said to have been
a 6M* black man, in his
early ^O's, clean shaven,
with hair worn in corn
rows. Police are. also
seeking an accomplice.
Vollmer, who had
worked for Newsday for
nine years, was divorced
and he and his former
wife, Mar{h3\Kalish of
Freepprt,, have two .children,'

FREEPORT/BALDWIN - Freeport school district
residents, in a low turnotit vote, okayed both their
school and library biidgets this past Wednesday, May 13;
while a larger turnout of voters also approved the
Baldwin School and Library budgets in that district.
Baldwin district residents
also gave their ap- •
proval'for the sale of the
Clyde Road froperty, in
North Baldwin, to Darren
Equities, which has proposed
to build 62 town
houses on the site.
There were three people
vying for one seat on the
Baldwin School Board.
Incumbent Bernard Pit-tihsky
won . re-election
over challengers -Anthony
Savoca and Wally Young.
Bill Athus was running
unopposed for' Baldwin
Library Trustee.
In Freeport two incumbents
sought to . retain
their seats.. Neither George
Boulukos nor Cal Venzen
were opposed and both
will serve another three
year term.
Freeport Figures
Nearly 68% of those
voting in the. Freeport
School District approved
tiii School Budget, although
the total of 1,043
voters on that line was less .
than last year's 2,723 figure.
This 696. voted yes,
347 no.
•the Freeport Memorial
Library's budget passed
675 yes to-303 no votes.
Boulukos received 797
votes; Venzen 725 votes.
. Baldwin Figures
In Baldwin, 1,503 residents
of the district voted
yes for the budget; 1,220
no. The 55% who approved
the budget was a
slightly higher percentage,
than last year's 53.5%.
when fewer people; 2,055,
voted.
The Baldwin Public Library's
budget received a
More resbunding vote of
approval, 1.767 yes, 933
no.
