BALDWIN - Although the $40,284,750 projected
1987-88 Baldwin School District budget'remains the
same, increased state aid has resulted in a lower projected
tax increase according to Baldwin school offi-'
cials. The tax increase is now projected at $1.90 per
-.SlOO.of assessed valuation „ , legislators and community
residents'who lobbied
on occasions 'such as PTA
Day in Albany and REFIT
Day. ,
REFIT is a consortium
of school districts working
.to achieve a more equitable
method of funding
education, particularly for
tho^e schciol districts labeled
"high tax-low
wealth." In such school
districts, the bulk of the
tax burden is assumed by
residents because there is-

projected S2.38, This'new
figure represents the lowest
tax increase in recent
years for Baldwin residents.
For at home assessed
at S7000, it means an actual
annual dollar increase
of SI33 versus the previously
anticipated S166.
' According to statements
by Baldwin Superinteh-r
dent of Schools Dr. Rol~

Freeport Superintendent
of Schools, Dr. Jphn E.
Bierwirth notes that the
district is now the median,
27 out of 53 school districts
in Nassau County, in
tax rate well, with the.gap
between the top districts
widening.
There is a big difference
in the taxes,"-iaid
Bierwirth. "We work hard
to keep it down," while
adding educational - services
and decreasing ciass
sizes.
Bierwirth also remarked-about
some of the reasons
the tax rate has gone up
in Freeport. He pointed to
the increased coKi.of /ia- •
bility insurance with the
estimated . premium . for
1987-88,' of , 5565,000,
several times higher than
it was three years ago; and
the per pupiJ cast of private
and parochial school
bus transportation, which
had doubled in just one

On a positive note,
however, Bierwirth
praised Assistant Su'[5«rin-tendent
