National Merit Scholarship Winners for 1987. OUlUWin nonorea
Kevin'Rugg,'a senior,at Freeport High School, and
Adam Zalma. a senior at Baldwin Senior High School,
are among 1,800 students chosen nationally to receive
National Merit •$2,000
Special Sfate Monies To
Help Worthy local Protects
ALBANY - Non-f>fdfit organizations and groups in
Freeport and Baldwin will be th? recipients of special
'Senate' legislative grants, thanks to the efforts of State
Senators Norman J. Levy and Dean Skelos. • '
The Freeport groups.which,will receive a total of
$63,000. are "the Arts
scholarships.
These "National" awards
are basic, to the -alnnual
competition because, winners
are selected in every
state and,all Merit Program
Finalists are considered
for one.
The 1,800. winners
named at this time are
among .^,000 high, school
seniors in" this year's competition
who are being
awarded Meri,^ Scholar-,
ships worth ovesr $22 million.

Kevin Rugg, of Beverly
Parkway, Freeport, is
Freeport High School's
Class of 1987 Valedictorian,
He is president of
the school chapter's National
Honor Society, and
has already' been named
the recipient of both the
George Washington University
Engineering Medal
and. the" Rensselaer Poly-
.technic Institute medal.
Rugg's school activities
include membership in
both the ' high school
marching and stage bands -
foi: four years member of
the "It's Academic" teamv
three years; Math Team,
four years; school newspaper
' ("Flashings"), four
years; and Faculty Section
Editor of the Yearbook.
Out of school, Rugg is a
membej of the Freeport
public and .independent- Fire Department Band.
secondary schools,.entered
the current"competition th'
their junior year-by taking
the qualifying test, the
1985 PSAT/NMSQT. Some
15,000 Semifinalisu, the
top scorers in each state,
were designated and announced
last fall. These
represented about .half of
one' percent of every
state's high school senior
class. •- . '
Almost 90 percent of the
Semiilnalists met the rigorous
requirements necessary
to advance to Finalist
standing, and all Merit
Scholarship winners were
chosen from the Finalist
group.
Rugg's career., plans,

engiheering and his
scholanhip-'is sponsored,
by Combustion Engineering,
Inc. •
. Adam' Zalman, the
Baldwin Senior High
School senior, is a resident
of Victoria Street. He is
his class' Salutatorian..
Zalma was recently
named State winner of the
Daughters of the American
Revolution Good Citizenship
Award.
A member of the school
chapter's National Honor
Society. Zalma is also a
recipient of the Brown

to . receive •. Meritorious .
Awards for Bravery.
At an Awards Ceremony
held Wednesday evening,
April 22 at the Uhiondale
Fire Department, First
Assistant Chief John P..
Brown and Fireman Sal-vatore
Gilardi, Jr. of the
Baldwin Fire- Department
were awarded Silver .
Medals of Valor, ' and
Deputy Chief Richard E.,
HOldener of. the Freeport
Fire Department received
a Bronze Medal of Valor..
Holdener's award covered
hb actions during a
car fire last April 26 when'
he responded to a still
alarm on West Milton
Street. A car was totally
involved in flame, endaii-gering
amearby house tod
garage. Chief Holdener
called in a general alarm
and put on his gear. As he
.-approached the car, however,
he noticed a person
under- it. in z semi-conscious
state.
Chief Holdener immediately
dragged the victim.

just as the front tire blew,
due to the heat of the
fire.

a house on-Kings Parkway

are the Baldwin Public
Library, the Baldwin Fire
Department, the. South
Shore YM-YWHA. the
Baldwin Council Against
Drug . Abuse, r the Baldwin
Recreation Association,
the. . Baldwin Football
League and Baldwin Little
League. The seven will
split a total of $54,000.

announcing '. the grants,
said they "were actively
supported in their efforts"
by Assemblyman Charles
O'Shea, the iiewly elected
representative of the 19th
A.D.
The grants were
included in the. recently
. passed State Budget', from
special funds allocated to
the Senate Majority in the
Budget for worthy local
programs.
"One of the purposes.of
this • fund is to provide
vital dollars to local
community organizations,
helping them to continue
the programs which enrich
the lives of local
residents,"" the local State

$20,000 to assist in the
purchase of an elevator to
provide better access for
the handicapped.
The $10,000 grant for
the Baldwin Fire
' Department will' help
purchase new. advanced
fite safety equipment.
The South Shore YM-YWHA's
$11,500 will be
used to expand their
programs serving- youth
and other local residents'.
The $5,000 for the
Baldwin Council Against
Drug Abuse will help this
organization continue and
expand their outreach
program which serves over
