FREEPORT - Voters going to the polls on March
18th for the Village of Freeport's next municipal election
might find a distinctively different, if not odd,
look to at least one part of the ballot.
Faced with the legal question of a candidate not being

BALDWIN - Several requests relating'to'tlie length of
the school day at the high school and real estate were
approved by the Baldwin Board of Education at its
regular monthly meeting held on February 11 ^i
- Brookside School.
The request concerning •
real esute came from the
proposed buyer • of the
school district's Clyde
Road property, Donald
Monti of Darren Equities.
The Board's approval
resulted in a change of the
resubmission of the
referendum from March
18, to the district's regular
annual election and budget
vote on May 13. - '
W^en the . Board
originally decided to
resubmit the referendum
to the residents, h noted
that the low turnout for
the December, 1986
referendum - when the
proposal was defeated,
was their motivating
factor (for a second vote.)
It was felt that a greater
turnout would better
reflect the thinking of the
entire community and
Board President Bernard
Pittinsky spoke of a public
relations effort to better
inform voters.
It appears, however, that
Monii cffnducted his own
survey and decided that a
mid-winter vote in March
would not'be conducive to
turning out voters and so
the referendum will be
held in conjunction with
the regular election and
budget vote in May when
approximately three times
the approximately 1,000
§eople who cast their
allots in December could
be expected to go to the
polls.
Add A Period
' In business more related
to - education,- the'-Bbard-approved
the request of
Baldwin Senior High
School Principal Dr. Peter
Lynch and the recommendation
of the
Superintendent of Schools
RoUand Jones and his
administrative cabinet to
extend the day at ths high
school from eight' periods
to nine periods. It was
noted that the "teachers
' contract, which had' been
agreed upon several years
ago, contains provision for
this change which is
already in effect in the
jiinior high ! school; The
extra • time would be
garnered by cutting each
period from its pesent 44
minutes to 41 minutes plus
changing slightly the
beginning and ending
times of the school day.
Students with a full
schedule would . have
additional instructional
time. In addition, there
would be greater
flexibility of both student
and staff schedules.-
Dr. Lynch described the
history of the proposal
with studies in December,
1985 by both the junior
high, school and senior
high school. New
requirements, particularly
in technology, library
skills and home and career
skills, necessitated the
change to the nine period
day at the junior high
, school this past Septemner.

of the ballot with the
designation of "IE,"
. Village Clerk DeVin-cenzo
iiotes, however, that
: all these numerical and alphabetical
designations are
tentative until . after •
February 20. Candidates
have until that date to
submit their letters of acceptance
of a nomination
and, he noted, he had not
yet received Caccialcre's.'
When questioned,' Di-
Vincenzo agreed that he
had never seen two party
symbols placed together,
but noted fhat it could
only happen in a' village
election. Judicial candidates,
' for example, who
run with more than two
party designations
(Republican, Democratic,
Conservative or Liberal)
have appeared on more
than two lines. The ban
on running on more than
two lines is for political
