FREEPORT - A three alarm-general
alarm fire on Thanksgiving
Day gulled the amtenls
and interior of the Summit Dental
building, 81 South Bergen
Place, Freeporl. Over 100 fire-fighlers
from Freeporl and Baldwin
battled the blaze in a 25 mph -
easterly gale and torrential rains.
Despite the iniensily of Jhe fire,
however, no major injuries
were reported.
The initial fire alarm for the fire
was sounded just before .9 am
Thursday, November 28, and
Department Chief Lee Tucholski,
who was on the scene almost

For-High Honor rating, pupils having four major subjects must
have all A's in these majors.
Money Would Be Used To

FREEPORT - After eight years of being turned down for federal
Urban Development Action Grant (UDAG) monies, the Village of Free-port
has finally received the go-ahead to try to attract developers ID use
these special funds. In order to use this funding, developers must propose
projects, that o^er construttion jobs and, when completed,
permanentjobs.
Freeport Village Mayor Dorothy Storm heard from U.S. Senator
Alfonse D'Amato's office recently
that the Village has been found -
eligible for UDAG. which is ad

Students with less than four
majors are not eligible for Honor

provides federal dollars jo
complement private- investment
monies and thereby makes otherwise
unfe^ible development projects
possible.
Freeport's eligibility means the
Village is now in a nationwide
competition among communities
of the same population for UDAG
allocations. A criteria for acceptance
of an application is that HUD
be convinced.thai "but for" .the
UDAG assistance, a developer's
project would not go forward.
Local UDAG projects in the past,
w'hich have been given credit for
the resurgence of the communities,
include developments in the
Oiy of -Long Beach, and the
villages of Hempstead and Green-port.

In making the announcement of
UDAG eligibility. Mayor Storm
hailed it. as "the brightest moment
of my administration thus
far." The Mayor explained that
UDAG eligibility for the Village

battled the mtrning blaze in 25 mph gale winds and torrential
