Air Problems Cause Rink Closing
Two Boldwinites Tesfs Blame "Oofside"

FREEPORT - The ice skating rinkat the Freeport Recreaiimi Center_
will remain closed until the village is able to ins.tall a new fill ration"
system and determine the source of chemicals irausing poor air quality
inside the "bubble."
According to village spokesperson Jean Peters, the most recent test
results, which the village received

this past weekend in Baldwin. Nut

Freeport's vamps' great weekend
began Saturday afternoon.
August 10. at Firemans Field iri -
Baldwin, where the Dead End
Kids" pulled out a close, dramatic
win in the old-fashioned tourney.
The event was especially dose
because one of Truck Company's
"star perfiiniiers. Bruce Newberry,
was unable to compete due' to an -
earlier injury. However, the .
"Kids" from Church Streer-reached
out fir that "something
extra." as Former Chief.Steve
Weiik so aptly described it. and
. captured points in every event to
win the title.
Former Oiief Don Mauers-bergcr
noted how important this,
win was for .the Truck Company
team. "We were really omcenied
when we lost Bruce earlier in the
week and we knew we had to give
it a little extra. But the guys did a .
tremendous job and deserve a
great deal of credit."
The win by Truck extends what
is an -unprecedented string of
tournament victories in the entire
Stale. Not only has Truck won the
tournament nine years in a row.-
but they have also won virtually
every year, in the past two-decades.
with the exception of
1976.
Second place in the Baldwin
tournament was captured by a
team. from Oceanside —
Columbia Engine; while t hird was
taken by Hose 1 in a fine showing.
The heroics by Freeport's
volunteers were only ihe beginning.

81 Year Old Pedesfrian
Critical; Man Killed

eastbound on Bnraer Avenue,
when his car was in collision with
a westbound 1978 Caniani.
According to Nassau County
police, the Camaro was driven by
Steven Gargano, 20, of Patten
Avenue, Oceanside. Gargano. 20. '
was transported to South. Nassau
Communities Hospital in critical
condition with internal injuries.
The accident ixrcurred at
11:15 pm on Bnmer Avenue in
the vicinity, of Suhnyside Boulevard.
' Kevin McKce. 20. of Cleveland
Avenue. Oceanside, a passenger
in Garganu's auto, has also been
reported in critical condiiion at
South Nassau. A second passenger,
Michael Parker. 20. of Elizabeth
Avenue. Oceanside was
ejected frtim ilie auto and run.
over by a third car. driven by
Bemice Malamed of Lynbrook.
Parker was transixmed to Nassau i
County Medical iTenler by a
Nassau police helicopier. He is in
Dr. Klein was pronounced dead
at 12:10 am Tuesday. August 6. at
South Nassau Communities Hospital.
No charges have been filed
at this time, but the cars were
impounded for brake testing.
Pedestrian Critical
The 81-year-old pedestrian,
Ruth Glen of Grand Avenue, was
crossing Grand in Ihe. vicinity of
Atlantic Avenue at about
10:54 pm; August 10, when she
was struck by a southbound car.
According to police, the car,
a 1978 Chrysler, was being driv'en
by Wallace Cohn of Links Drive,
Oceanside.
Cohn, president of a garment
firm told police that the elderly
pedestrian had walked out in
front of his car.
Mrs. Glen was taken to South
Nassau Communities Hospital
by the Baldwin Fire Department.
She is said to have suffered two
broken legs and .internal injuries.
No charges have been filed.

"rink was shut down by the village
after eniplyoyees complained
about the general poor quality of
the air. including stuffiness. No
. smell was reported, Ms. Peters'
says. .

complex remains unaffected.
'ihe village ordered several air
quality tests and evidence of carbon
tetrachloride, chloroform,
methylchloroform and perclilro-ethylene
were discovered.

March. During the summer, how-.
ever, it is used only for stieet
hockey and box lacrosse with
players being in the "bubble".

Mayor Dorothy Storm stressed
that the shutdown was voluntary
and the-minor traces of chemicals
found in no w^y pose a health
hazard even to a person working
. in the atmosphere for a- continual
40-hour week. None of _the'test
results, the village says, were"
higher than .3 of 1% of accept-"
able limits as set by the federal
Occupational Safety and Health
AdministraUon.
. Following the most recent testing,
pointing to an outside source,
the village has decided to ask
Nassau County Commissioner of
Health Dr. James Dow ling and'
the Couiity Board of Health to
investigate, the situation in order
to determine exactly what, the
source of the problem is. -
The "bubble" would "normally
close at the conclusion of the two
summer sports programs, and reopen
on October 12 for ice
skating. U is hoped, said Ms.
' Peters, that the filtration systeth
will be completed and in working
order by that time and the rink
will reopen on schedule.
The Mayor said the village
wouli^ rather "overreact" to be
sure. '"We are. without a doubt.

Teen Wins National Contest
FREEPORT - A 17-year-old
Freeport High School honor student
has been crowned Miss
Black Teenage World. Ihe first
New York State contestant ui
win this contest.
Sharon Cort rece'ived her
award on August 2, at Ihe
pageant held in Antiqua, West
Indies. She was also voted Miss
Talent. Miss Creative Expression
and Miss .Congeniality by her
fellow contestants.
Miss Cort's prizes from the
New York State pageant included
the trip to Antigua to compete
in Ihe nationals and S1.(XX) in
scholarship money. Her rewards
for winning Ihe national pageant
included four year scholarships
lu. bolh_lhe Hampton Institute
in Virginia and St. Paul's College,
also in Virginia.
Frecport's national winner has
also received an award from the
Nassau County Youth Board of
h'er acheivements during the
.International Year of the Youth.
Besides.being an honor student.
Miss Cort is vice-president
.of Student Government at the
high school. She is a member of
Operation Get Ahead and a
featured performer vith the Djng
Island Musical Thealer Yo'uth Ensemble,
directed by. Betsy Dick-erson
of the Dickerson Performing
Arts Center in Freeport.
M'lss Cort has been included in
"Who's Who Among American
High School Students."
Her future ambitions are to
attend Boston University and to
pursue a career in Corporate
or Entertainment Law.
INTERNATIONAL TITLE. The newly crowned Miss Black Teenage
World, 17-year-old Sharon Cort of Nassau Avenue, shows her trophies
to Freepcrt Mayer Dorothy Storm. Miss Con won her title on August 2
in the Antigua, W.I. pageant. Besides winning the'top title.- her fellow
ccniestanis voted her Miss Talent. Miss Creative Expression and
