presenting the flowers, noted .
Spinelli's assistance and interest
in. the BEA and 'her-efforts to
help the BEA in its activities.
' 'Therie were then various comments
by BEA members and the .
Board 'on the charges. Regarding
alccdicd abuse, it was n o^
that it is important to stimulate
community awareness to the.
problem and the posnble meth'
ods' to remediate and 'cure the
problem as well as edifcate
the community. Since there are
several orgsntzaUons indnding
FTA and Parent Networking also
studying the question, it was
questioned Whether it might be
better to unify forces rather t£an
to dilplicate efforts since there are
already so few. people who are
active. The pros and tons of the
various studies were mentioned
with the need for some intercom-munuation
delsired.'
Under the charge to study
school pc^aes, O'Neill suggested
that security and Vandal!^, the
notification process to parents
and ' extra-auricular activities
were all sub-areas in wbidi the
BEA would like input. In the
study of extra-curricular programs,
O'NeiB' s^d ' that - the

. Discus^g the sdioot district's

Freeport businessman _ and
ex-president of the Freeport
Chamber of Commerce; and Al
Sirlin, ei-truslec of the Village of
Freeport were among those at the
meeting. Ocera introduced
Beggiiis, who apparently is stepping
into Sirlin's shoes as chair- '
man of the village's recently
formeid Businessman's Development
Committee. . '
In his preliimnaiy remarks,
Beggins.described himself as in
the "pre-purchase en^'m^ering
iiispixtion" bnsmos, but previously
THE LEADER had been
told he .was also in the .{iiel
bnsiness^and in exterminating.
He recently purcliased the old
theatre and diner, originally to
use the theatre for his company's
headquarters. The diner, THE
LEADER was told at that time,
was to be temporarily rehabilitated
for lise of Bieggins' company
wtule wok was ongoing at the
larger building. 'Hie smaller
building apparently was originally
slat^ to then come down to
allow for parking at the site. r
Those plans seen to have
changed as work proceeded.
Presently, the theatre' building
houses enlistment and information
offices of the various armed
services J and the diner is. becoming
a permanenl structure.
Beggins talks of the theatre building
as an ofiice building and twin
theatre, although no definite
nibbles for a movie theatre have
reportedly been received.
Mayor Dorothy Storm has.
appmnted several new committees
since her election in
March. The committee on which
Beggins is servipg has 'under
discussion tlie Central. Business -
District. Also being. stadi«). are
parking problems in the'lndostri-al
Park, the waterfront area, and
traffic. • : -'
the proposal presented .by -
Beggins for the committee was
before a ^oup of pec^le who
would by nature of their location
be inteiestedin the Ontral Busi-
' ness District. Many of them have
already gone on record asking
Mayor Storm to reopen the mall
for veh'tcular traffic.
Begginsiiods that the Freeport '
Mall's "unique problems" must,
be placed iiito the perspective of
its relationship to the entire
downtown area. (EDITOR'S
