. FREEPORT - Martha DeSalvo,
anative-bom Freeport resident
ana a member of the Village's
Zoning Board of Appeals for
more than ten years, has been
named that board's new chairperson.
Mrs. beSalvo, a resident of
New York Avenue, was appointed
by Mayor Dorothy Storm at the
Village Board of Trustee's meeting
of Monday evening, July S.Mrs.
DeSalvo will replace Chairman
Milton Sanders, whose
resignation ftt)m the Zoning
Board was accepted with regret
that same evening;
Sanders has resigned from the
Board, after a ten year stint, for
persona] reasons.
Mayor Stortn also appointed
Ed Yamin, an attorney and the
newest member of the Zoning
Board, as its deputy chairman.
Sanders* resignation leaves
the five-person board short one
member and Mayor Storm later
said she will be making another
appointment.
Mrs. DeSalvo is the only real
. veteran of the Zoning Board. Two
• of its members, William White,
Jr. and Kenneth Bagatelle, were
appointed by Mayor • Storm on
Organization Night, the beginning
of April. Yamin was appoint- *
ed several weeks ago to replace
John Travers, who had resigned
because of illness.
Mrs. Storm made another ap-pointmentMonday
evening, naming
Mabel Mitthauer to the village's
Housing Authority.
In other matters on the agenda,
the Board transferred SI ,500 to
the budget of the Property Improvement
Committee to pay for
planters and other activities.
Presented with three possible
plans to deal with the now-vacant
• Prince Avenue Campgrounds,,
which the village is
landbanking for possible future
use as the site of a well, the Board
dedded'on the middle proposal.
It agreed to spend S7,6S0 to demolish
the building and foundation.
The other proposals were to
just demolish the. building
(S5,5S0) and to dear the property
completely ($12,200).
The Freeport Community Development
Agency was authorized
to convey four parcels of
land to Nello Homes for $1 each.
-The plots-will be used for one-family
homes and are situated on
Babylon Turnpike and on North
Columbus Avenue.
The property in question had
been an open Mr market on the
west side of Wooddefl Avenvie
and a parking lot and storage area
on the east side of Ocean Avenue.
Now, apparently, Tom Masot-to,
purchaser of the plot, wants to
use the Wooddefl Avenue side to
house his boating interests. And,
according to,a letter his attorney,
. V. Rcy Cacciatore, senl to the
' Planning Board,'wants to sell the
South Ocean Avenue side to
Waterview Realty for construction
of 24 condoimniums.
The South Ocean Avenue parcel,
however, is not zoned for
condominhims, so Masotto's firm
.(Broughm Enterprises) and
Waterview Realty have applied to
the Planning Board as a first step
towards a zoning change.
In Cacdatore's letter, he notes-that
the Ocean Avenue's plot is
zoned ' for manufacturing and
intimates thai, if the zoning is
not changed to allow for condominiums,
a factory could be bmlt
there.
The proposal made by the applicants
is for 24 condominiums.
Half of them would be one-bedroom
units on the first story of
tiie building; the other 12 would
be two-bedroom, duplex units.
The condominiums buildings,
therefore, would attain a three-story
height.
A change of zone to allow for
condominium/apartments did not
sit well with the Village's Planning
Board and. at their June 25
meeting, they recommended that
the Village Board deny'the application
when they hear it.
The Planning Board called the-proposed
zoning change "spot
zoning", arid said it would increase
the traffic problems in the''
area. Instead. Hie Planning
Board — recogniang the shortage
of housing — recommended
that the property be rezoned
"Residential A" for one-family
home construction.
The developePs next step is
the Village Board, which has the
say in zoning changes. Al the-
Board of Trustees' July 1st meet-
- ing. it was notified of the Planning
Board's recommendations.
Mayor Dorothy Storm said she
would prefer to have 'the necessary
public meeting on the issue
held after the Board receives the
consultants' report and the report
: from the Committee on the Stad-
.iiim. Waterfront, etc., which is
due around July Is.
To allow for time, the Board set
August 12th for the -necessary
public hearing.
