BALDWIN - The family of
TWA Flighl"847's co-pact, Philip
G. Maresca, received a "boost"
to .their own spirits .Wednesday
monung, June 19, when the 42-
year-old . former Baldwinite was
seen on a television film clip.
Maresca's brother, Peter, told
THE LEADER that at first he was
concerned that. . viewing his
brother on TV could upset their
mother, if the pQot looked as if he
bad been mistreated. But, Pete
Maresca, manager of Fred
ChaH's Marina in Freeport, said,
watijiing the film'. was _ "fan-
•tastici"; because -hi^^-brother
looked good and — on the film -^
was "his normal, witty self."
Pete. Maresca also'expressed
his fanaij's belief that his brolher
would come home safely.

FREEPORT/BALDWIN - Some 475 high school seniors wiU receive
their'diplomas at commencement exercises at Freeport High School
while about 495 of their peers at Baldwin Senior High School nil] be
involved in the same traditional ceremony. Commencement exercises
will be held this Sunday, June 23, beginning at 2 pm, at both schools.
If the day's weather permits, ceremonies will be held outdoors on the
schools' athletic fields. If it rains.

and other family members and
guests, and school officials will
move into the high . school
gymnasium and tickets will be
required. -^

program will feature three student
. speakers: Valedictorian
Anthony Scalamandre,' Salu-.

Scalamandre, whose speech is
entitled "Attaining Social Acceptance,"
is graduating with a %.00
average. In the fali, he will attend
Rensselaer Pidytechmc Institute,
pursuing a. program in aerospace
engineering.
Timothy Carroll, graduating
with.an average of 94.19, win .
speak on "Overcoming Physical
Handicaips." . He . wOl attend
Yale University, in September,
majoring in engineering.
Cheryl Swank's speech is
entitled^ "Ctmqaamg Civil
Barriers. "T AH three students
speeches are based bit a statement
by Booker T. Washington:
"Success is to.be measured not
so much by the position that one
has reached in life as by the
obstacles which he has overcome
while trying to succeed."
. Baldwin's Student Speakers
At Baldwin High School's
Commencement Exercises, the
student speakers will be Louis
Paul, the Class Valedictorian, and
John Basedow, the Salutatorian.
Louis Paul, who distinguished
himself in the school's Honors
Program with a straight A/A-h
average, is a member of the "
National Honor Society and the
French Honor Society. An oboist
in the All-Cbonty Orchestra, he
was also a finalist in the prestigious
Westinghouse Science.
competition. He will be attending
Princeton University,
John Basedow. is also an
Honors Program straight A/A-h
student. He has been.elected to
the National Honor Society and
the Spanish Honor Society. His
accompUshments include partid-patlon
in the Long Island Science
Congress, a member of the Math-^
letes and of the Tennis Team.
He will be attending Williams
College in the Fall.

Monday, June 24, at 8 pm, at
ViUage Hall.
The new local law wMild
establish a Landmarks Preservation
Commisdon, which would
review and recommend to the
Board certain places, sites, areas,
buildings and structures within
tilt ViUage to be designated as
.landmarks, landmark sites or a
historic district.
