December 6, at Baldwin Senioriiigh SdmoUln an atteinpt.tp .outline
their goals arid organize their activities. A small Informal steering committee
had met previously and had formulated an agenda for the
evening. The steering committee
had composed a resolution of pur.
pose and petition subject to the
approval of the interested residents
and had pointed out that
the concern was not only of those
residents adjacent to the Creek,
but of the community as well,
since the County'i prt^potal is of
such magnitude. (See THE LEADER,
December 6,1984.),
A^r a briff sammary of the
project as it. was .expltioed by
the engineers on November 38'.
and 29, there was dlscmsinn of
the lEsciepandes in those informal
presentstions and concern
about many questions which
remain unanswered. In.addition,
long-time residents, who are
{ai^liar with the Oeek, discussed
problems that have occurred be-*
cause of lack -of _maiBienance.
One woman told this reporter
that she once saw a s<rfa floating
downlSe etteX and assonves that
it must stiU be aUidk in the
' dogged, undeaned underground
culverts. Residents also rag-
. gesied lesJi, drastic measures
which might possibly aOeviale
local flooding and correct erosion.
The main thmtt of ^ rneeting
was.that residents were united
In their belief that, in order to
eliminate (6eal flooding, the
County had linked it to the macb
larger flood control problem is
the Uniondale-Roosevelt-North
Paldwin-North Freeport ares.
Thef indicated that the local
flooding could probably be corrected
by mioor adjustments,
paiticnlariy the xleaning and
realignment of the underground
pipes under Sunrise Highway,
but that the dramatic overhaul of
the entire creek, u described
in the County's proposal, was
needed only to accouiroodale the
tremendous quantity of water
w.hich the Conn^ will be directing
southward toiBaidwih frdm
the north. According to engineers,
there are nine, already
completed projects in the north
with bulkheads that have been
closed uatil the completion of the
Kfilbum Qeek Project.
At that time, over 2100 galiona
ot water per second would be
directed through- the underground
pipes, the' man-made
creek and dummy creek.
In order to separato (he two
problems, the residenta wiD be
circulating a petition thatresds:
"We the residents of Roost-veU,
Baldwin and Freeport,
who reside adjactnfto MUbum
Creek, duly feel 'that
action tnuit be taken by
the County of Nassau to.
stop aU existing local.ftoed-tag
which occurs along Mil-bum
Creek.
However, we 'the undersigned,
feel that the County
proposii to reitruiture water
dndnage along MUbum
Creek is unacceptable in its
presenlforvu" . r
In addition to (he petition,
resu^ats fiOed out surrey sheets .
which requested committee participation.

project; or felt otherwise. They

The Home Rule Patty, which
