50-year-old mascot, is under
attack by a member of the com-munity
who finds the popular
sycjbol religiously offensive.
Oting the word devil as having
"evil" connijtations, Freepciter
John Asher has requested that
•the Freeport Board of Education
ban the use of the Red Devil ftora
all school functions and activities,
including sports.
"There's quite a few people in
the community that feel their
rights have been violated by
having that representing their
children." Asher said-in a telephone
interview earlier this week
with THE LEADER. He maintained,
however, that he is acting
on his own behalf without the
support of any religious group'. .
Asher first took his stand at a
school board meeting in Decem-
-bei and has since-written-school
board members requesting that
the mascot be dropped. He has
five children currently attending
Freeport schools,' including one'
Cambodian child, whom he is
sponsoring.
"It's springing-from my owii -
religious convictions," Asher •
said. "I don't care what Ilhe word
devil] has come to mean in Free-port.
I care, about what it means
elsewhere."
Asher said he has contacted
members of Freeport's religious
community and has garnered
some support,' but declined to
specify which organizations' or
leaders. At press tinie. THE
LEADER was unable to identify
these groups.
Although Freeport Superintendent
of Schods',' Dr. John"'E.
Bierwirtb, dedined to comment
on Asher's request; the sdiool
board has solicited opinions'from
community leaders in the hopes
- of reaching a decision by mid-
March.
