Seven Saved From Gas-Filled Home

Chamber of Commerce. Bob's worK lor the Village, including t^ls Job

president Jo Cona and vice-president Larry Grebinar. As the final
event of the five-year-long national — and village-wide — celebration

For Violations
FREEPORT - The owner of
the stores and residential flats
at 84 Broadway, Freeport, left
Village Court S750 poorer than
when he arrived Thursday
afternoon, October 1. Village
Justice Ralph Franco fined Aziz
Othman, of Hempstead, that
amount for several violations
cited in Court by the Village's
Building Department.
Among the charges are the
failure to supply hot water,
a leaking roof.broken windows,
allowing stagnant water to
collect in the parking area,
storage of abandoned vehicles,
leaking plumbing, faulty flooring
and peeling paint. .

violations in the two weeks
to 30 days he was given for
various ones, Othman will have
to pay even more money: a
maximum of S250 on each of
eight.chargesof a total of $1,875.

• FREEPORT - Three Freeport police officers and a volunteer fireman.
Freeport First Deputy Chief John Provenzano, were admitted to the
hospital early last Thursday morning, October 1, after their heroic
rescue of the occupants of a WcxJdside Avenue home. The officers —r
Mark Wittich, George Stephenson and Edward Locke — suffered gas
poisoning after they pulled seven
bullet, prepared by gourmet chet Michael Ocera; the big bana sounds
of "Rhythms, Reeds and Brass;" and an historical centerpiece contest
at the Ball. Tickejs lor the Ball, to Ije held Saturda^tghl, October 17,

The 33 seniors were among
the top 51.000 participants
in the 27th annual National-
Merit Scholarship Program.
A spokesman for the National
Merit Scholarship Corporation,
which conducts the Merit program,
stated that "to be designated
a Commended students is
an outstanding attainment,
deserving of public recognition.
The nation will benefit from the
continued educational and per-,
sonal development of students
such as these, for they have
shown exceptional promise.
We sincerely hope that the able
young men and women being
honored will receive whatever
assistance is necessary for them
to achieve the high goals they set
for themselves."
Of some 1^2 million students
who entered the 1982 Merit
Scholarship compethion by taking
a qualifying test in 1980, about
3b.000 are bein'g commended this
month, as they begin their final
year of high school. These nartici-pants
scored high, but slightly
below students in their respective
states who qualified as Merit
Program Semi-finalists. Only the
15.000 Semi-finalists, who were

Schedule
FREEPORT - All Freeport
Village offices ' will be closed
Monday, October 12, for the
Columbus Day holiday.
There will be no meeting of the
Village Board of Trustees that
evening. The Board will meet in
legislative session on Monday,
October 19, at 7:30 pm, and in
public isession at 8 pm.
There will be no pickup of
garbage on October 12 in the
northern section of the Village nor
trash pickup in that area on
Thursday. October 15.

' According to a police source, a
member of the family residing at
28 Woodside Avenue, found his
family and what was apparentiy

Officer Wittich arrived at the
scene, followed almost imrae-diateVyty

Wittich, who was the first
one in the house, smelled the
gas and saw several unconscious
people on the first floor. He
immediately called for additional
help and returned to' the house
vvith his own oxygen. Locke
arrived, tried to reyive the
victims found unconscious
on the first floor of the house
while Wittich went up the stairs
and used his oxygen to try to
revive a woman on tiie second
floor.
The seven occupants were
unconscHous, overcome by the
toxic carbon monoxide fomes,
and barely breathing, according
to the police report. One, Bema-dette
Habeeb, 23 years old,
of the Wocxlside Avenue address,
was said to have been in respiratory
arrest.

According to police-and fire
department sources, the carbon
monoxide fumes were caused
by inadequate ventilation of
a gas hot water heater and oil'
burner.. LILCO personnel called
to the scene later examined
the jheater and found the faulty
ventilation apparently was caused
by cWmney blockage. THE
LEADER was also informed that
