is chairman of this year's races which will run.from 9:30 am to approximately

A second Freeport team at the
Islip event. Engine Company,
also placed in the top five in two
of the individual events, finishing
fourth in the : Cart Hose and
fourth in the Efficiency Replacement
competitions.

Mall's Image
FREEPORT - Pescribing himself
as having lived in the village
for only about eight months,
Gordon Otlow of Meister Boule-
, vard South spoke Monday evening,
August 3, at the Village
Board's twice-a-month public
meeting, about Freeport's image.
Orlow, who said he was in the
advertising field, told the Trustees
that in disciissions with
businessmen on the Mall he came
away with the belief that the "village
doesn't seem to be doing a
great deal about changing its
image."
People, said Orlow, feel the
Mall is "unsightly and danger-a

Races on Sunday, August 9.

on the Mall for their 53rd annual
Dollar Days. Local stores traditionally

boarded-up bui'.ding at one end
of the Mall, at Sunrise Highway
and Henry Street, an "eyesore,"
and described its position as
"marquee type."
In answering Orlow's remarks.
Mayor William H. Whiu noted
that "it is unfortunate that you
haven't been it. the village that
long to recognize that...we have
done something to change the
image." White disagreed that
a massive advertising campaign
could do something about it.

At Festival
Our Holy Redeemer's big St.
Rocco Festival and Bazaar opens
at .7 pm, Friday, August 7, on the
§rounds of Our Holy • Redeemer
chool. Chairmen Peter and Mary
Lou Anglim promise good food,
exciting rides and many games of
skill and chance.
The Bazaar and Italian Festival
in honor of St. Rocco will continue
everjr evening through Aiigust 16,
opening Monday through . Friday
at 7 pm and Saturday and
Sunday at 6 pm.
Ceremonies of formal dedication
of the feast will be held
Saturday, August 8, starting with
a Mass celebrated by Monsignor
Saverio C. Mattel, the church's
pastor, at 5 pm, in Our Holy
Redeemer Church on Ocean Avenue
and Pine Street.
Following the Mass, Civic
dignitaries and parish organizations
will march in a pnxression,
with the Statue of St. Rocco
carried in the place of honor.

dignitaries and clergy. Fourth

Well-Loved Saint
St. Rocco is a saint well-loved
by the Italians. After the death of
his parents, when he was about
20, ne distributed his wealth to
the poor.. He traveled to Italy and
devoted his time, prayers and
service to the care of those who
had been stricken by the plague.
During the time of the bazaar,
money pinned' to the statue in
honor of the Saint will be contributed
to the St. Vincent de Paul
Society for its work in helping the
needy of th? community.
Many persons attending the
bazaar will plan to have their
supper there and then go on to
enjoy the rides and games, Mr.
and Mrs. Anglim predict. There
will be Italian and American food,
including sausage and peppers,
zeppole, cannoTi, hamourgers,
hot dogs, Italian ices and clams.
Rides at the bazaar include a
ferris wheel, swings, a kiddy ride
and scat ride.
There will also be niany games
of skill and chance and Vegas
games for the adults.

For Annual Canoe Race
For the seventh consecutive
year, the Annual Great Canoe
Races, sponsored by the Free-port
Chamber of Commerce, will
be held in Freeport's waters. As
of Monday. August 3. more than
