"TREEPORT - Three village police officers have been commended by
Nassau County District Attorney-Denis Dillon in'a letter he sent to

.months that Dillon has written to White singling out members o{ the
Freeport Police Department. ' ' " ' .'
Officers Edward MartiD, iUchard Neubauer and George Dowdell
were"subjects of Dillon's letter pertaining to a robbeiy at Nathui's is
the fall of last year.
The incident occurred on October
16.1980.when Officer Martin,
then off-duty, observed the
robbery as he drove by the
Sunrise Highway drive-ui restaurant.
He watched as the
robber, later identified as Floyd
Parish, fled on foot down Cboreh .
Street carrying a sawed-off'shot
gun. FoUOwiiig Parish, Officer
Martin saw. him enter 20 Church
Street, and called for assistance.
Officers Neubauer and Dowdell
answered the call.
Civilians at the' scene told
the police officers tjiat- Parish
was on the second floor of the,
apartment house. Several young
children .were playing in the
hall-so the officers .did not draw
their weapons nor let Parish know

be hired by the village; Vlllaneuva and Muniz, the first with Spanish surnames.

To County Championship

Swim Team, completed its successful winter season by winning'the
Nassau CQuntyJ)ivision U Championship. In the process the Sea D«viU_
upset previously undefeated Levittown, the only team to have beaten
Freeport this season. The Championship meet was held eariier this
month at the Long Beach High •

with subsequent good police
work by other members'of the
force resulted in the 'anest of
two teenagers charged' with
committing the robbery.
According to the story the five
girls told Freeport police officers,
they were on their way home,
about 4:30 pm, when a male
and a female teenager walked
up to them, arid said, '.'Give, me
your money, or yourlife'.'!
After pulling the gold neck-
.'laces and bracelets from the
necks- and Prists, of four of the
five, the.pair ran off. 'An adult at
the station called the. police and
an alarm'was quickly put On the
air with the victims' descriptions
of their alleged robbers.
Several- blocks away, P.O.
Westennann was patrolling the .
Freeport Mall area on foot when

Registration for the Swim
Devils' summer season will take
place Tuesday, May 26, 4-6 pm,
in (he lobby of the Freeport
Recreation Center. Anyone 18
years old or Mnder is invited to
join the team. Experience is not
necessary. Two medal winners,
butterflyer Mikie Colon and back-stroker
Hugh Cohen, had no previous
experience and became outstanding
swimmers in one short
season.

_ FREEPORT - Monte Irvin,
well-known baseball plaiyer with"
the New York Giants during the
1950's, will present a program entitled
"Recollections of the Black'
Baseball Leagues" on Thursday,
May 7, at 8 pm, at Freeport's
Raynor Rock Smith Recreation
Center.
The program will commemorate
the 20th anniversary of the'
first meeting of the trustees of the
Freeport Historical Society which
took place May 7,1%1.
Irvin originally played with the
Newark Eagles during the late
1940's, along with other such
well known, baseball stars as
Larry DOby and Dun Nencombe.
In 1946. the Newark Eagles took
the Black World' Scries. Irvin
also recalls playing at Freeport
Stadium which was home field for
the Pennsylvania Red Caps.

SCHOOL LIBRABY-MEDIA WEEK WAS PROCLAIMED as the week
of April 27 by Freeport Mayor William H. White (I.). ITie Mayor's proclamation,
which he presented to Freeport Superintendent of Schools
John E Bierwjrth (c.l and School District Director of Media Resources
Ronald Braz, made mention of the district's "outstanding school
•library-media program," with its 10 trained specialists, seven school
libaries, more than 60,000 books and over 5,000 oon-print items, which
service 7,400 students and some 500 staff members.
