Affirmative Action Policies Questioned
• 'FREEPORT - The question of Freeport's affirmative action policies
came up at the Village Board of Trustees mUing Monday evening,
April 20. Colonial Avenue resident Louise Simpion referred to the recent
hiring of eight new police officers by the VUlage and congratulated
the trustees on hiring one woman and two men with Spanish surnames.
Simpson, however, questioned
the "moral implications" of
going against the "rules of the
affirmative action goals in other
communities."
When asked what they were by
Mayor William White. Simpson
^answered. "My understanding is
you have a special list. You have
(wo lists, one for hiring regularly
and one for implementing affirmative
action rules."
While told her she was wrong.
"You only are allowed to get one
list." he said, explaining that if
the village had not hired from the
list, its payroll would not be
certified.
Simpson, however, referred to
an article in a newspaper which
stated that the village of Freeport
did not have an affirmative action
plan. In answer. White said the
village does. Simpson then asked
if it had been given to the Roose-velt-
Freeport NAACP.
NAACP CompUlns
About Htrin<{
Earlier this month. RoKerT
Hodge of the NAACP had charged
that Freeport, Long Beach
and North Hempstead werr slow-in
complying with federal guidelines
on minority hiring.
At that time. Michael Kirwan.
the village's Human Rights Commissioner
told THE LEADER that
the village had put forth "good
faith efforts" in that area. He
cited recent employment of
blacks and hisp^nics in the
village's Building Department
and in Village Hall. Kirwan also
explained, at that time, that all
available job openings were referred
fo his office and were publicized
to minority groups.
Monday evening, however,
Simpson complained that the
number of minority people living
in the village was actually.higher
than the amount "legally carried."
She pointed to what she
said was the more than 50%
minority in the school census.
People could relate better to
their own kind, explained Simpson.
Therefore, she said, it would
• niake for better neighborhood
-relations to have an increased
number of minorities on the
police force.
While agreed with her. but said
that of the 16 names released to
the village for the current police
hiring, none were black. Al-
. though, the village requested ad-diliutial
names. White said, none
were released. - —-
"It is a two-way street." said
White, calling on the black community
to help convince young
black males to take the police
Civil Service test and to pass it.
"1 will work with you to do
that," said Simpson.
