Freeport School Vote May
Be Delayed Until June 17
FREEPORT - Insufficient information from AJbany apparently will
result in a change in date for the Freeport School Budget vote. At a
special meeting of the Board of Education Monday evening, April 13,
the Board voted to change the date of the budget vote, and school
board election, from Wednesday, May 20 to Wednesday. June 17.
Sara Holly, president of the
School Board; said the change
was necessitated by the present
' "impasse" in Albany. "We
don't know" what-we will be;
getting for state aid," said Holly.
"We feel we cannot go to the
public without the bottom line."
Holly said she had been on the
telephone that day with representatives
of the State Legislature
and the Governor's office. The-
Scnate. Assembly and Governor
all have Afferent proposals
which would mean varying
amounts of state aid for the
Freeport School District in
1981-82. Under the Governor's
proposal, Freeport would receive
an citra SI .2 million in aid.
The Senate proposal would give
Freeport an additional SI.9
million; and the Assembly
proposal was somewhere in
between: an extra $1.5 million
for Freeport.
Save-harmless districts do not
have the same problem as the
Freeport School .District, Holly
said, because they know just
about what they will receive.
Freeport, however, cannoj be
sure. The CAP on operating aid
has been lifted, said Holly, and
the district will therefore receive
more than last year, but is
uncertain just how much more.
According to Holly she had
been told that the delay was due
to "Medicaid...Until Medicaid
is solved." she said, "they (the
lawmakers] are not discussing
anything else in the budget."
With J8.000 in the budget
representing one cent en the tax
rate, the $700,000 span betaeen
the highest and lowest^ state
proposals could mean a" tax
difference of nearly 88C per $100
assessed valuation fOf Fieepun
School District taxpayers.
One Lul Try,
On Wednesday
Holly said letters about the new-date,
would be mailed to all
district residents. But first, she
said, she would make one last set
of calls to Albany on Wednesday,
