by approximately 200 parents, teachers and other community members
who leasted on an assortment of desserts prepared by.the PTA
and a punch prepared by the FTA. Helping to greet Bierwirth (c.) were

and Marilyn Clark; (Bierwirlh); PTA Council president Marilyn Roller;

No Surprises At Village Board's
Annual Organization Meeting
rtlEEPORT - In under 20 minutes Monday night, April 6, the Village
•• Board of Trustees held its annual Organization Meeting and saw the
swearing in of re-elected village officials Mayor William H. White,
Trustees Dorothy Storm and Al Sirlin and ViUage Justice Ral^h Franco.
Those in the audience were apparently faced with no surprises as no
changes were " made in the
Freeport Fire Department's
eight companies elected company
officers Tuesday night, April .7.
at the Department's annual company
elections.
Under the provisions of the
Department's by-laws, each company
is to elect a Captain. First
Lieutenant and Second Lieuteur
ant, to serve for a one year
period, on the first Tuesday in
April.
- In most cases, only the Second
Lieutenant position is a contested
election, although there were
several exceptions.
The results of the company
elections are as follows: -

FREEPORT - A three-and^jne-balf year resident of northwest
Freeport, father of two children in the Freeport School District has
announced his intention to run tn the forthcoming School Board
election. At the same time, present School Board president Sara Holly
officially told THE LEADER that she will not seek a th'ird term as a
School Board member.

at the start of the meeting and
Rev. Joseph Robinson ended the
evening with the benediction.
Wearing his judicial robes.
Judge Franco was sworn in by the
also black-robed Hon. Patricia
Collins, Judge of the Family
Court and a Freeport resident.
Franco then delivered oaths of
office to White, Sirlin and Storm.
In his short speech, the Mayor
noted that he had taken the oath
of office "with no little awe"
and.as a full-time mayor for the
first liine in the incorporated
village's S9-ypar history. 'He
added, however, that the function
of the Board of Trustees and the
Village Court would remain the
same as originally constituted.
"Hundreds of Freeporters
make this vilagc work." said
White, thanking the municipal
employees and the members of
the various commissions and
committees.
White, who had been serving
full-time for the past two weeks.
said that in that time he had
noticed that "govenunent is
working faster," because he can
now respond faster to the concerns
of its citizens.
Stono Reappointed
As the first order of business.
Mayor VThite once again appointed
Trustee Storm to serve
as Deputy Mayor.
Reappointed for terms of one

Seeking his first term and
running for the seat presently
occupied by Holly is Cal Venzen
of Wallace Street. Venzen, who
is vice-president of the Commitr
tec For A Better Freeport, a recently
formed group headed by
former school board member Ed
Monroe, is a m'edical sales representative
with a deg'ee in Economics
from Long Island University.
fJe and h is wife, Yvonne,
have two youngsters. Marc, 6, a
tirsl-grader al Culuinbus Aver
School, and Renee, 10, a fourth
grader at the same school. The
family formerly lived in Queens.
Venzen said he had been
approached by Monroe ''once
before" to run and had told him
"I would be interested...! am still
in . the learning process," explained
the candidate, while
noting that he would have run for
a Board positiJft even if HoUy had
not decided to step down.
Presently candidates for School
Board run for specific seats,
rather than- at-Iarge as Freeport
Village Board Trustee candidates
run."~A petition has been circulating
this year, however, which
would call for -election of the
highest vole-getter(s) as in the
Baldwin Sch6ol District. The
petition asks for the proposition
to-be-on the ballot in this year's
school-vote. If approved by the
district "residents, the change
would take effect for subsequent
elections.
Venzen said his reason^ for-running
weie_to help his own
.children. in the school district
and "all the kids in the village...
1 am going to. stay here awhile,"
he stated, "and 1 feel that I have
to be a part of the village."
Besides his position on the Committee
for a Better Freeport,
Venzen cited as his past community
activities the instigating
titien-^^to-elean-up the area
on North Main Street and Lena
Avenue," and attendance at
(some Village" Board meetings.
The candidate also said he has
been at some School Board
meetings.

Sara HoUy, who last week
told THE LEADER that she had
not completely made up her mind
whether to seek re-election, told
this newspaper this past Tuesday
afternoon that she definitely
would not be running. She
eiplained that she would be
attending a school in computer
programming fuU-\ime and that,
as well as personal considerations,
had led to her decision.
"1 have thoroughly enjoyed my
six years serving the community
as a School Board member,"
said Holly this week, "and, if

Philip hhrhart, ovinei uf Ehi
hart's on Frepon's Nautical Mile,
is dead at the age of 47. The
popular, well-known waterfront
figure died April 4 at Lydia E-Hall
Hospital.
Village Mayor William H-White,
who knew him and had

FREHORT - The village has
not yet decided iwhat action -to
lake following a New York
Court of Appeals decision that its
rent permit law is unconstitutional.
According to Village
Attorney Michael Solomon this
past Tuesday, Judge Dominick
Gabrielli's wrinen opinion,
handed down on March 31. was
first received by the Village the
day before.

discuss it wuh the Village Board
of Trustees.
The Village's rent permit law
mandates that rental permits
arc to be obtained for all residence
rental property within the
Village. No permit, says the law.

"safe, clean, sanitary, in good
repair and free from rodents
and vermin;"
Permits are renewable every
two years or at the time of a
vacancy and owners of Qie
properties must immediately
notify the Village's Department of
Buildings of vacancies.
In the event of violations, the
Building Department may issue
a notice of violation or a notice
to vacate the premises. Landlords
who do not obtain rental permits,
can receive a peniUy "of S20O
per day for each day in which a
building is occupied without a.
rental permit.
Judge Gabrielli held that the
imposition of a penalty upon a
landlord, for renting his premises
without first consenting to a
warrantiess search, violates the
property owner's Fourth Amendment
rights. He called the
