Mayor William P. Glaeken gave
the piinoipal address at the colorful
Memorial Day exercises held In the
Munlcipttl Stadium Monday morning.
He was ptesented by Saosuel D.

of the parade that preceded the

The Mayor first referred to thp
men and women who have made the

among Ujem were numerous Free-port
residents.
"Our remembrance must be of
the present as well as of the past."
he continued. "And so we keep in
mind the fact that there are forces
abroad In this world of ours that
would strip us of our rights. These
forces are mallgnanUy determined
to substitute for the free government
of our people s system based
on deceit and oppression and cruelty.

**We are face to face with a simple
fact. That is that a powerful group
of persons -exists who deny the dignity
of man and the sanctity of
God. Its aim Is to substitute the
mlBhty force of a political machine
for the freedom we enjoy under
our Constitution. In the face of this
Implacable force we need more than
ever to realize the things we are
called upon to do to preserve the
heritage that Is ours. *
•'We need to see to It, then, that
the rights guaranteed by our form
_of_fovemmcnt are observed. That
~we~Brant to others the same right
of freedom of speech, freedom of
thoughti freedom of protest and
freedom of religious observance that
we desire for ourselves. Then let
us remember that with every rl!;ht
-we enjoy there ^oes a duty to observe,
That duty seems to be stnipJn

that we ilve the best that W in uc

If we avoid our duty and l«ave to

we will no longer hitve a
