that the propo^ was "highly
controversial and that hie bad
received "a lot of input" on the
matter. He later told THE
LEADER that he had received a
petition from local merchants
objecting to the proposal, a letter
of objection from the representative
of the owners of the^hell.
Medical ~Bulldtlg adiacent to th<e
plot: and had heard that residents
of Smith Street, behind the
Merrick )3oad site, also objected.
White said he fitVffred holding a
public hearing because "of the
obviousness that thls^lhc piece of
propertyl has to be developed for
something" and because of its
importance. ** "
Although the motion to have
village counsel prepare for a
public bearing was made during
a legbUtive session'of the board
when-no-public participation b
allo»-ed. the attorney for Sossman
and Bellesb did comment. Gerald
Halpcm laggested to the board
that the public hearing; should
also include the possibility of
changing the uming'for the mdja;

hope to avoid the charge of "spot
loning."
' About a week prior to their
meeting. • the Nassau Coupty
Pllnniag Board had dbapprovcd
of tl(e application: calling it "spot

pointed out thiriumMindiag and
contiguous areas to the pkil were
zoned cither Business "AA," the

Because the parcel lies within
500-feet of a county highway or
facility (Merrick'Road) aad was
disapproved by the Couwy
Planning Board, the ViUagr
Board will have to amnovc the
application by a vote of a majority

will have to vote "yes.
Mayor White -disagreed with
attorney Halpem's theory to hear
a discussion on -rezoiiing the

the Elks Club_lan_d,_Whltc pointed
out that the owners of-the Medical
