Rent Increases Are Fixed
FREEPORT - Future rent increases in village apartment houses will
be under guidelines determined by a Nassau Countv Rent Stabilization
Board because the Village Board of Trustees, on Monday night, October
19. voted to ask New York State to include Freeport under the
Emergency Tenants Protection Act of 1974.
The 3-1 vote in favor of establishing
some rent regulation in
the village came II days after a
public hearing on the matter.
Trustee Al Sirlin cast the one
negative vote. Mayor William H.
White, called out-of-town due to a
family illness, had sent a memorandum
to the board recommend-at
the November 19 meeting
bringing the village under the
ETPA.
Tenant group:
According to Sirlin, Freeport's
rents are not higher than surrounding
areas. He charged, in
fact, that they arc lower than .
some in Rockvillc. Centre and
tong Beach. He expressed his
concern that if reiit stabilization
goes into effect.', the landlord
would do "only what is required
through the book'*'leading-to a
ton Park.
The original sale price was
$1,083,780 for sale of the 13-plus
acres of land in between Sunrise
Highway and Merrick.. Road.
Some $471,455 is destined to be
spent for street improvements,
traffic lights, and underground
electricity and water lines. .The
question of whether New York
State will take part of the
$612,000 of add more money to
the kitty seems to be another so-far
unanswered question.
Among those speaking for
" Ffeeport's~~waieifiout interests.
was Jo Cona. of Apache n and III

director, of the Chamber of

Another waterfront businessman
Jerry Bracco of Captain

help people find the waterfront

The attorney, who had -been

administrators had.' found it

. However, 'he explained,

Superintendent of Schools Don
Costlow- noted that the Freeport
School District had evaluated its
rcsp«inse to Title IX early, but had
left the practice at Atkinson
because it had not been mentioned
specifically in the law and was
more practical in terms of use of
the bathrooms on the way to
lunch, recess and fro'm class to
class. Costluw also reminded the
board that the district had integrated
home economics and shop
classes a year earlier than mandated.-
'
With the board in total agreement
with its attomev's report.
Costlow'said implementation of
, Title IX at Atkinson School would
be implemented immediately.

The lone dissenter. Sirlin. told
those attending the meeting that

Sirlin favored a moratorium,

the public hearing by the Landlord
Association, to allow time to
