Merchanfs Complain Of
Unexpected Increases
WILL BE USED AGAIN. This well-known landmark on the weilern
border of the village.will be rehabilluted and put to use once again
when Nassau County begins work In July to refurbish it. The Victorian-era
old "Water Works" on Sunrise Highway has bttn damaged by
..Sfveral fires and by vandalism. Including the taking of its copper leaf

FBEEPORT - After many vQlagers liad attempted to save the old
MUburn Pumping Sution (Water Works building) on West Sunrise
Highway from destruction. Nassau County — its present owner — has
announced that it WiH be rehabilitated for use by county agencies. '
The Victorian-era building, formerly part of the New Ycnrk Ctty water
supply system.'was designed by
Frank Freeman, a noted architect
of the late 1600's. according to
the • Nassau County Historical
Museum. The bnOding is notable
for rounded arches over the
windows a wen-proportioned
mass, and bricks of an unusual
color.
Unfortunately, in the last two to
—-three-ycars,-it-has also becoroe-known
as the scene of fires and
vandalism, ranging from the
pirating of its metal roof, to
blazes wbidi destroyed a great
deal of its tower.
Under the' two contracts a-warded
by Nassau County
Executive Francis T. PurceD. the
15.000 square feet brick building
win have its slate roof and tower
repaired as well as its windows
- replaced and tempciaiy lightiag
tiistalled.

Fire Department and the Freeport
Ftre Department Band marched
off with big wins this past weekend.
At the Stiuthem New York
Furmen's AssiKiation Parade,
held in Mineiila Saturday. June 9,
the Freeport Fire Department
w;on the second place trophy for
best overall appearing fire
department. The Freeport Fire
I>epartment Band took tirst place
for best appearing fire department
band m the same event.
Sunday afiemoon. June 10. the
Second Uaitalmn utd-hashtoncd~
Tournament was "held in neighboring
Baldwin. The Freeport
Truck Company End Kids once
again captured the point total
trophy with a tournament winning
total of 27 points.

sought to direct the court to

rental to a rock group as a
rehearsal haU..
General construaion of the
repair work will be handled by
K & X Contracting. Inc. of Man-hasset.
lowest of four bidders at
$89,950. DectricaJ work was
awarded .to Hinck . Electrical
Contractors. Inc.. West-Babylon,
the sole bidder at S9.842.

FREEPORT - Work recently
has been comptcicd at three
village parks. Begun last fall and
utilizmg some S/O.OOO in .federal
funds, the improvements were
done under the direction of the
Frcepori Community Development
Agency.

Richard Wcisberg who, at ;ihe
time the suit was brought, was
acting as campaign manager for
two candidates for village board.
Green's suit cited certain
technical aspects of the specifications
and claimed they had not -
been adhered to.
At the time. Wcisberg explained
that the suit was based on
the theory that the bid tpedfica-lions
called for the submission of
an "operational plan," describing
the routes and detailing the
schedule ot services to be used,
as weU as alternative procedures
to be followed in case of severe
weather of equipment failure.
The suit's contention was that the
plan originally submitted by Five
counties had been found unsatisfactory
and a revised one had not
been submitted as of February 9.

The suit was dismissed in
March by State .Supreme Coun
Justice Andrew DiPaola. slating
that there were no le^al grounds
and that the awarding of the
contract was within tht discretion
of the Board. Green's unsuccessful
appeal followed.
