FREEPORT - "We are gang to
do something ourselves," one
resident of West First Street told
the village board at the Monday
night. May 21st public meeting.
More than three dozen of them
had come down to ask the board
for help in a situation which had
already been chtonided in the
weekly and daily press and on tel-evisicn.
Their neighbors, one
speaker explained, had remained
at their homes. to stand guard
against what thiey said was increasing
harrassment, intimidation,
violence and vandalism on
-their street which they^dalmed.

Budget Also In
FREEPORT - Rain, accompanied in ttie evening hours by thunder
and lightening, did not deter Freeport residents from approving a
schiHil budget on its first submission. Yes voters oupoilcd no voters by
4^S voles Wednesday, May 23, to approve a 98^ school tax increase.
Voters also approved a library budget which will raise the tax rate
by 7< per SlUU tax valuation.

FREEPORT - The official Memorial Day observance in the village of
Freeport will take place Wednesday, May 30, as the annual parade
begins at 10 am from Freeport High School. Four divinons of marchers
and vehicles will be paying a tribute to the men and women of thb
country, and in particular this community, who gave their lives in its
service.
The parade route leads south
on South Brookside Avenue to
Merrick Road and then east to the
Freeport Memorial " Library,
where a formal program will be .

district's budget only once this
year.
•Ellen Kelly, running unopposed
in her first tiy for a
sch(X)| board seat, polled 1.958
votes — more than the 1,818
votes cast fur the school budget
-and the i.868>otej-fonhe1lbrar)f
budget. Kelly will take the seat^
presently occupied by Jack Reilly.

The school budget vote cast
was 1.818 yes and 1.363 no. the
clearest and loudest approval for
its passage came as usual from
the Oeveland Avenue School
polling place .where 107 votes

Street Schiwi, there were 375
yes votes; 305 no votes. Atkinson
Schixil voters • registered 324
votes for the school budget;
2111 against it. At Bayvlcw
Avenue School, the vote was 367
yes and 398 .no, Giblyn School
was the only other district to
bring in more votes In the negative
mlumn: 3338 votes no to
309 yes votes. At Columbus Ave-
-liue School, the vote was 336
in favor of the schcxil budget;
109 against it.
The library budget passed
by 760 votes; 1.868 yes and 1,108
no.

Superintendent of Schools Donald
Costlow stated, "The successful
passage of our budget

strive for educational excellence
for each student in our schools,"
The next public meeting of the
sch(H)l board is scheduled for
June 20. The annual reorganixa-tion
meeting will be held in July.
More Funds
For Section 8
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The
village of Freebort' has been
awarded an additional 5231,000
for its rental assistance program,
by the Departnient of Housing
and Urban Development. The
funds come under Section 8 of the
federal housing program.
