FREEPORT - The village Board of Trustees will be considering an

FREEPORT - The Federal and State Governments have approved
grants to the Freeport School District of 575,000 in matching funds to
be iised to construct a playground for Dodd Junior High School.
In 1973. while the Phase land Phase II construction plans xlere being
prepared, school district' voters had approved speeding S75.000 to
develop the site of the old Dodd .

District move the proposal

Congressman Norman F. Lent

funding by the Heritage Conservation

the U.S. Department of the
Interior. Project - approval had
previously been received from the

Planning Commission, and the

Development Clearinghouse.

WASHINGTON. D.C. - In a
statement issued jointly with
Freeport Mayor William H.
While. Congressman Norman F.
Lent announced that the House
Subcommittee on Water Resources
has approved his proposal
calling for an Army engineering
study, on enlarging and
deepening the Jones Inlet and the
. Freeport Channel.
Lent said he hoped the action
would be ratified by the full
House Committee on Public
Works and Transporation this
week. • '
The Cpngreutnan.-^^x ,who

has been working closely with
Mayor White and with Nassau
County and Town of Hempstead
officials, as well as with Free-port's
commercial fishermen and
charter-boat, operators for this
survey.
"There is great potential for increased
economic activity and
growth in this area of Nassau
County if these key waterways
can be broadened and deepened
ior navigation by larger fishiiig-vessels."
Lent noted.

"Freeport's commercial fishing
industry critically needs Jones
Inlet and channel improvements
wilhin the next few years if it is to
continue to grow."
Freeport. as a home port for the
fishing Industry, ranks third in
size on Long Island. The fishing
industry generates some $75
million for Long Island's economy
and it employs 9-I0,(XX) workers.

Bernard Levy, who represents
Cannon Taxi, the largest of the
cab companies opcratLng within
the village', was appearing before
the board for the second time
within a month. On April 16, he
asked the trustees to approve
increases which were modified
following a study by Trustee Al
Striln. At- that time, the board
voted to Instruct village counsel to.

drivers for Cannon Taxi (^as up
their cabs each day at their on-n
expense. In effect they lease cabs
from the company on a day-by-day
basis and splii^ng the gross
receipts SO-SO. Drivers- pay for
gas out of their 50%. If, there-tore,
a driver collects S60 In fares
for the day, and It costs him SlO
for gas. he gives Cannon S30 and
makes S20. If fares were Rlgher.

any rate-increases without the
proper heating, he would speak to,
village Attorney. Michael Solomon
and see that the legal
procedures were expedited.
Levy told the Board that "we
(Cannon) are faced with- a. desperate
situation" because of the
increases in gasoline prices. He
called any extended delay "tantamount
to putting us out of-business."
Explaining that "gypsy"
cabs operating without village
approval were-charging hlghft_
rates^. Levy said that licensed
companies were being hurt by.the
"law.
As outlined at the April 16
meeting by Trustee Slrlln the
Increase would bring cab fares to
SI.50 for the Central Zone.

for Zones 4 and 5. ;
The last legal increase in cab
fares b the village took effect
July 1,1974.

Another "cannon spokesperson
told THE LEADER that while
gasoline . increases effect the
driver's share, other operating
cost increases have been borne by
the company. Insurance costs, he
said; had gone up 5 0 ^ this year
and maintenance costs have also
increased. The cab - company
would also like to put on more
cabs, he said, and increase
service.
